How much yarn for mittens?

Hi,

I would like to purchase some yarn online but i dont want to overbuy or underbuy…

Most of the mitten patterns i found dont tell me how much yarn in grams or yards i need to make mittens…

Is there anyone that has knitted mittens before know approximately how many balls of yarn i need to make mittens? (and do men and women have a huge difference in terms of the size and how much more yarn it needs?)

Thanks so much!

It depends on what kind of yarn you are buying (many yarns come in 6 oz. skeins and some only come in 3 oz.) on my mittens I used Caron Simply Soft (6 oz. a skein) and I used about half the skein. I made a size small, so you would need more yarn if you were making mittens for a big man’s hands. so if you are buying any yarn that comes in a small skein (like 3 oz.) get two balls, and if you are buying a yarn that comes in larger ones (like 6 oz.) you will probably only need one

Wow thanks for the quick reply!

The yarn doesnt come in oz…but it comes in grams…and i did a little conversion… this is the yarn i wanted to buy

so that means i need about 4 balls of those? o_o wow it seems a lot doesnt it? unless im calculating wrong…:aww:

Edit: oh dear i think i am mis calculating…silly me  i need about 2 of those balls to make 3oz hee…

Thanks for your help MaleKnitter!

If you wanted to make the same mittens as me, then you would only need 2 balls of that, I would buy three to ensure that you have extra

there are 28.333 (twenty-eight and one third) grams in one OZ. of yarn

Yeah, 50 gms translates into approximately 1.75 ounces.
