And just how big would your stash be if you hadn’t lost those years? Hmm?
I’ve only been knitting about six months. I’m still in college and work a lot of shows in and out of school, so I don’t have much free time. I needed a knitted garment for the last show I designed and couldn’t get anyone to make it for me since, well, none of my friends know how to knit or want to. I got some crappy yarn, chopsticks (college student budget), a copy of SNB and didn’t get off the couch until I could co and knit stitch. Knitting’s been really great for me. I rarely get to go home and see my family since I live pretty far away, and when I do I want to spend a lot of time with my mom, who’s pretty sick and can’t get out much. It’s great to just hang out with her at home and sit and knit. I’m slowly peaking her interest in learning. Every time I come over she’ll say “do that again slower” or “explain cables again.” I’m getting her a knit kit for her birthday, so hopefully soon we can knit together.
My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer right after Thanksgiving. In the next few weeks, looking at on-line destructions (those other than Amy’s) and instructions (Amy’s) gave me something to distract myself. I got some Homespun and some of that fluffy stuff, and started a scarf. It was kind of my therapy thing, to go sit with him and spend time with him and knit away.
HMMM…I put a beginner but I was actually taught both crochet and knitting as a child by my mom and grandma. I would pick up one or the other every now and then as a child but never got into it. This April I saw all these fabulous felted bags and other knitted accessories (shawls, ponchos, belts, scarves, etc) and didn’t want to pay the prices for the things I was finding…I thought “I can do this!” I ordered a copy of S&B & a book for crochet and was on my way to the craft store when I fell down the stairs and sprained my ankle. ( BAD…We actually thought it was broken for a while. The ER doc wasn’t sure. ) I was looking at weeks on the sofa with nothing to do. So the next day I made my husband help me into the car and then go get one of those old lady motorized shopping carts so I could go to JoAnn’s and pick up some yarn. I bought yarn for both a crochet project and a knitting project. So for the next few weeks I did very little but knit. While I did finish the crochet project (an case for my sunglasses) I really took to knitting. So far I have completed a scarf, a poncho for my dd, a shawl, a felted bag, two pairs of socks, a bag our of S & B and a belt. I am also working on a sun dress for my dd (although that isn’t looking good about actually finishing it.) A pair of fiber trends clogs, and a baby blanket for a pregnant girlfriend.
