I finally started my first project - a pair of socks. The only time I have to knit is while I am commuting to/from work. I want to estimate how long it will take me to complete a pair of socks. Of course I will be slower than any one of you. So how many knitting hours do you spend on getting a pair of socks done?
It depends on what needle size and yarn you’re using, but it probably takes me three or four hours for each sock with sock weight yarn. I made my first pair in worsted weight in about five hours total. It’s pretty difficult to estimate, though, since I work on them sporatically over weeks.
I just started doing socks about a month ago. Right now I usually only knit at work, so it takes me about a week to do one sock. I usually knit for 3-4 hours while at work 3 nights a week. That’s worsted weight yarn, too. I guess I’m a slow knitter too!
I would guesstimate that my first few socks took me about eight hours of knitting each. They were made in sock weight yarn, and in kid’s sizes. I also knitted those painfully slow. My knitting has sped up incredibly lately as I 99% knit, and only 1% crochet these days. I can’t put an estimate on what it takes me now, as I’m usually working on more than one pair at a time, and they are often my “at work” projects, which means I may only knit on them for 5-15 minutes a day.
I dont get to work on my mine as much as I’d like but I normally work with the real thin weight - the one below sport weight (I think) and it takes me about a week to do one sock - but I’m limited on my knitting time. About 1 hr a night (2 if I’m luck) - the most I get done is when we go out to eat - I knit while we’re waiting to be seated, waiting on the waitor, waiting for the food, and waiting for everyone to finish their food. You can get alot done then.
Dont just yourself on how long it took everyone else - you may pick right up on it and fly. Plus, if you have small feet, you dont have to make them as long.
I’m working on a pair now that have a cabled pattern in them so these are really taking me awhile. I’ll love them even more when I’m finished!
I learned how to knit socks in October the Toe UP way and I love it. I’ve knit a pair in four days. :XX: :XX: I didn’t do any housework the whole time…but boy those socks look great. lol :roflhard:
Oh Celine :rofling: :rofling: , a woman after my own heart! Sounds exactly like something I’ve done.
I’m about halfway through my first real pair on sock weight yarn and I’ve found that I’m going to have to lighten up on the tension. I’m being such a tight knitter I can’t slide my stitches along the needle. I can’t wait to finish these and go down a needle size on the next pair, bound to be easier and faster. How long does one pair take? Hmmmm…hard to say without knowing how long you get to knit during the day, how long you’ve been knitting and…well you get the picture.

Far too long. I wish I could knit faster. I have a pattern for chunky yarn weight socks and those knit up quickly. I love them in my winter shoes. I have patterns for worsted weight too, and although I don’t know how long they took exactly, they didn’t take too long. I’m about to knit some with sock yarn next. I did do the sandal socks in it, and it went more quickly than I expected, so maybe I won’t give up. :crying: Good luck with yours! samm who doesn’t mean to be discouraging at all. I quite enjoy the round and round and round…
I’ve been knitting socks two-at-a-time. I’ve been working on them for about 3 hours so far, and I’m only 1/2 way done with the cuff. So, I’m going to guess that they’ll take 9 or 10 hours for a pair. Yah, I’m kinda slow.
My first two pair took about a week. (I can only knit on weekends and at night) I’m working on the Broadripple socks and have frogged the first sock 3 times. But I’ve up-sized my needles and think this will be the last time. I think/hope the gauge will be right this time.
I can take over a week per sock, sometimes two. I’m working on a pair now that is cabled, with size 2 dpns and sock weight yarn for myself (adult size). I only knit at night after the day’s work is done. Knitting is my reward so I sit back for an hour or two per night and enjoy the process, both knitting and tinking, rather than thinking when the finished project will be ready. I think I’m the worlds slowest knitter, but I don’t care.
