How does one make a felted pincushion?

I was in my favorite fabric store the other day and there was a display of pincushions. They appeared to be composed entirely of felted wool. I didn’t have time to ask about them. They were in various sizes, but most were grapefruit-shaped and had swirls of color through them. How does one make these? Can I simply throw a ball of yarn into the washing machine?

This was on Uncommon Threads on DIY just yesterday!
Look here!

I made one about a month ago after seeing one at my local quilt shop. They are pretty cool!

drat!
I can’t get that up on my computer. I live way out and have nothing but a glacially slow dial-up connection. Anything with a lot of graphics or video is practically impossible.

Any other source for the directions?

Try out directions for making felted beads, just make them bigger, I think that would work.

They are very easy to make. You need rovings in different colors. Wrap the rovings into a ball, similar as to making a ball of yarn. Add colors, designs with the rovings, etc. Don’t expect the detail to be very high, though. Then put the first ball into a nylon stocking. Tie a knot securing the ball. Add the next ball, tie a knot so that it looks like round old fashioned sausages all tied together. Throw in the washer with hot water, a little soap or vinegar and some old tennis shoes. They will felt down nicely into little balls.
