How do you thread yarn through a button?

Hello!
I was wondering if anyone had a trick on how to thread yarn through and average size buttonhole? Not a huge button but not a teeny weeny one. My tapestry needle is too big to go through the buttonhole. Does anyone have a trick or some advice?

Thanks a bunch!

Whenever I’m sewing a button onto a knitted garment, I just use a regular needle and thread.

Well I was thinking about doing that, but I need a very strong hold on the button and I thought yarn would be extra reinforcement. My cousin crocheted me a pair of toe sandals

and I copied them last night in knit form (silly me can’t read a crochet pattern).

They call for a button on one side to connect the straps, so I wanted to use the bo tail to attatch the button. I figured that the button would probably get a good workout and this would help from it falling off. Well maybe I’m just really rough with my buttons lol.

Do you think that thread would work?

Thanks a bunch!

Maybe you could wrap the end of the yarn with tape or something to make it stiff and try to fit that through a smaller needle and button?

I would unply the yarn, if possible (Cut a piece the desired length, then untwist it, and use two-three plies of the yarn, rather than the whole thing) and use a regular needle with a large eye.

 Would love to see your knit sandals  Would also love your knit pattern if you want to share

Toe thong Pattern or Barefoot Sandal Pattern

Need: 4 ply yarn (I used red heart)
Size 13 needles (straight)
2 buttons
1 needle

Co 1
Row 1: Incr into st (2)
Row 2: knit across
Row 3: Inc inro both sts (4)
Row 4-5 : Knit across
Row6: Inc both ends (6)
Row 7-8 : Knit across
Row 9: Inc both ends ( 8 )
Row 10-16: Knit across
Row 17: Inc both ends (10)
Row 18-21: Knit across
Row 22: co 5 sts at beginning and knit across (15)
Row 23: co 5 sts at beginning and knit across (20)
Row 24: BO LOOSLY !!!

Attatch a button on one end of the straps (where you co 5 at) and attatch a button the way you see fit.

There is no need to worry about a buttonhole because the stitches are so big you can simply pop it into one of the stitches. If you feel that you need a sturdier buttonhole then make one before you finish the straps.

Tie your CO tail into a loop big enough for your index toe to fit in. I just thought of this and am going to try it next time. You could make an i-cord long enough to make the toe loop before you start on the pattern. The length of the loop is up to you and your toes.

I usually have a big problem wearing TOE RINGS and the loops I have made for my toe does not bother me a bit.

Make 2 thongs and go to the beach.

I have been walking bare-foot with mine on and I have also been wearing my “regular” sandals over top of them.

Oh so sorry about showing you guys my toes lol… wow big enough to get a close up view lol. By the way, my foot size is a 7- 7 1/2. I would think for bigger or smaller feet you could just leave out a couple increases or rows. Modify it however you like. I kept holding mine up to my foot while I went.

 Thanks so much, spooky! I love them…very cool :sunglasses:

Ingrid’s idea gave me an idea…what about stiffening the tip of the yarn with white glue, twirling it between your fingers to compact it and make it pointy, letting it dry, then threading it through?

Or using a really heavy-duty needle threader through the button?

Or using a much smaller regular needle threaded with heavy “button/carpet” thread, pass that through the hole of the button to make a loop, put the yarn through the resulting thread loop, and pull it through the hole?

I tried the tape idea last night and it just kept falling apart on me lol. I also tried the needle threader thing and it nearly fell apart on me :roflhard: . I think I am going to try the glue idea. A couple months ago my step mom and I were threading beads and wood glue seemed to work the best. We tried everything from wood glue, elmer’s glue, to nail polish. I even tried to use a latch hook. LOL found out real quick that it wouldn’t work.

Keep the ideas coming ! I need all the help I can get lol !

In the beading section you can often find a type of beading needle that is perfect for this. Imagine a needle threader without the thingy to hold on to… just the diamond shaped wire. You can buy these for stringing beads with fibres that don’t fit into conventional beading needles. As long as the yarn will physically fit through the button hole, this should work.
