I teach it the same way (english) as a right handed person because you have to use both hands anyway. I think if a lefty learns to throw/ have the working yarn with/in their right hand it will be easier if they become an avid knitter to follow patterns and picture instructions. Since it is all kind of fumbly to begin with, they don’t really notice
I agree. I’ve taught 2 lefties to knit, and I’ve taught them to knit right-handed. They both learned readily; one kept it up and eventually adjusted her style to make her left hand do a lot of the needle movement even though she was holding the yarn in her right hand.
knitting, like driving a car, or touch typing, or lots of other tasks, is TWO HANDED.
there are 2 needles, (one goes in each hand!) and there is yarn (it can go in either hand!)
some lefties like a left hand yarn hold, some like a right.
when i teach, i teach how to hold and move the needles (and just leave the yarn hanging!)
when the student know how to move the needles, i say OK, now pick up the yarn and hold it in your hand as you work…
and they pick it up…
sometime right handed, some times left handed…
sometimes they change as they work.
eventually, they settle on which hand they want to hold the yarn in… and then i teach how to purl!
Being left handed, I agree that it’s best to learn like everyone else does. However, it didn’t start to be comfortable to me until I started Continental. My right hand does not like ‘throwing’ the yarn.
I have taught a citóg (left-handed person) to knit. First I tried to teach her right-handed knitting but that didn’t take. Then we tried leftie knitting by sitting opposite one another, knees to knees, as if she was a mirror to me. This worked beautifully.
Good luck!
Fortunatly, for my knuckles, my parents weren’t Irish or Catholic.
The Irish nuns at my friends’ school rapped her knuckles bloody.
