How do you Slip 1 with the yarn in front at the beginning of a row? I don’t really understand.
I believe you will slip the yarn purl-wise, then carry the yarn across the front of that stitch before starting the next stitch.
Just have the yarn in front as if you’re going to purl. Slip the stitch then move the yarn back to knitting position (if you’re going to be knitting the next stitch).
Are you doing this to create the nice chained edge? If you are then the last stitch is usually knit.

you don’t want the yarn to go [U]over[/U] the needle. That would create an extra stitch and I don’t think the pattern is calling for that. You just want to move the yarn to the front, slip one stitch and then put the yarn to the back to continue the knit row or leave the yarn in front to purl the row (depending on what the pattern is asking for on this row).
No, move the yarn back [I]between[/I] the needles to knit the next stitch.
