I usually make mine with cheese (sometimes processed but I hate it. We usaully go up the street to the bulk food store and have it sliced off the block. We donāt have a cheese press yet) and super transulent onions slices. Or with provolone and rye, or with⦠I have so many variations itās not funny. A good taste is putting some coconut oil down in a frying pan, heating it up, and putting your sandwich on that. Yummy!!!
I usually make them pretty plain-butter in a cast iron skillet (melt it a bit) then put the first slice down, top with colby jack cheese, place second slice of bread. Flip when well toasted adding the second pat of butter and repeat on second side. Sometimes I add ham or tomato, but usually I make it lie this for the kids (plain, that is!).
My favorite though is a grilled cheese on my homemade pepperoni bread-yuuummm!!! I make it almost the same but using the pepperoni bread (which has tiny bits of pepperoni, italian spices and a bit of tomato paste and parmesan cheese mixed in the dough before shaping and baking). I use the same butter-in-the-skillet method, only with this one I use 2 thin slices of provolone cheese instead of my usual colby jack. YUMMMY!! Goes wonderfully with my homemade Pasta Fagioli soup!
I just bought some whole milk mozzerella the other day, which Iāve never tried before (that I remember) and I want to try it on this.
I think Iām going to have one for breakfast :teehee:
This thread got to me and yesterday I went out and bought bread, a tomato and some provolone cheese. I made a grilled chicken, tomato and provolone grilled cheese.
For the most part Iām a velveeta, two slices of white bread buttered on the outside type of gal. I donāt like anything on my grilled cheese but figured Iād have to put some healthy things on it yesterday to take away the guilt of eating just gooey cheese, butter and bread.:teehee:
Yay! I was beginning to think that I was the only person here that squishes the grilled cheese with the spatula.
Iām of the āif it has anything else in it, it isnāt a grilled cheeseā camp. Butter the bread (I prefer whole grain types, but anything will do), american cheese, and SQUISH! Serve with tomato soup for dipping. Yum!
I make it on a skilled with butter, of course. BUT, I place a bowl on top of it the sandwich. The extra weight pressing down helps make it gooeyer, I thinkā¦like the old-fashioned press sandwiches for the campfire.
Hmmmmmmmmā¦I know what IāM having for dinner! I absolutely LOVE grilled cheeses!
iām getting hungry!! usually use homemade 1/2 wheat bread, with colby jack, lightly butter the bread (the part that will hit the skillet) and cook til lightlybrowned (tho, usually i get distracted and it is more like dark brown!! also goodāuse the Philly veggie bits cream cheese spread.linknit41
All this talk of grilled cheese and no mention of a Croque Monsieur?
Must be all that ham. Ahhhh, Iām drooling now and dreaming of Paris.
But seriously, Iām a purist when it comes to my grilled cheese. We donāt eat processed cheese or white bread so itās cheddar or swiss and whole grain in our house.
Sometimes I use butter but more often I use Earth Balance because itās easier to spread and doesnāt burn as fast. I donāt eat them often but my teenage son loves them.
Normally I just do the traditional buttered bread and American cheese butā¦
A few weeks ago, my mom tried putting MAYO on the bread instead of butter. Believe it or not, I couldnāt tell the difference! And itās much easier to prepare because you donāt have to make sure the butter is softened, you just grab the mayo, spread, and grill!
