How do you knit a sock using laceweight yarn-is there different equipment?

I’ve never knitted before but need to make a pair of professional-looking under socks as part of my product design project. What machine/processes would be used to knit a high-quality, tight pair of socks from laceweight yarn. Are there any good tutorials of this process as well that would help me?

A sock isn’t the easiest first project to take on because of all the shaping involved. I wonder if a tube sock might fulfill the project requirements and be more approachable?
