How do you do a "right twist" (from Meema's Bag in

Hi all,

Brand spanking new member here. I’ve been knitting for almost a year now. I just discovered the SnB books and love them!

How do you do the “right twist” stitch? I found it in the pattern for Meema’s Bag in SnB (the first one). They give directions, but I must need a video, b/c I don’t get it!

TIA,

I couldn’t find a video anywhere, just directions:

Skip 1 stitch and knit the 2nd stitch, then purl the skipped stitch, then slip both stitches from needle together.

Thanks Ingrid. If you’re “skipping one stitch” does that mean slip it to the other needle, knit the next one, then put the first stitch back and purl it?

TIA!

You don’t slip it first. Just work the second from the tip first, then work the one closest to the tip next. When both are done, then you slip them off the left needle.

you can also knit the first two stitches together, and then knit the first stitch again before sliding them both off the left needle.

Thanks all! I figured out what I was doing wrong. Had to have my mentor watch me. Common mistake, LOL. It’s coming out nicely now.

Thanks again!

can you explain what you were doing wrong? That way, if someone else has the same problem, they can’t get the answer!

Umm, I was puttin my needle through the second stitch, but in front of the left needle instead of behind it. I must have done it a dozen times, but didn’t realize. My mentor saw it immediately. I had to laugh at myself b/c I’ve been knitting for a year! Pretty silly that I didn’t “remember” how to do a regular knit stitch!

So the correct way to do a “right twist” stitch is:

  1. knit the second stitch (putting the right needle into the stitch and behind the left needle, which is the way you would normally do it!). Don’t slip the stitch off of the left needle yet.
  2. knit the first stitch as you would normally knit.
  3. Slip both stitches off the left needle and onto the right needle.

Notes:

  1. The stitches will be very tight and you may drop them at first.
  2. The stiches will look a bit twisted/on top of each other on the right needle.
  3. I did this on circular needles and needed several rows before I could see the pattern. Until then it just looked a bit wonky and I thought I was doing it wrong.

HTH someone.

rock on! thanks!

Andddddd…I just found 2 dropped stitches on the twists, both 4 rows down! And it’s on circulars with about 80 stitches around. Arg! What a pain to try to knit down to! And when I did, I dropped one again. Holy cow! I had done about 6 inches without a problem and then started dropping like mad! Oh, well, LOL!

Did you try just using a crochet hook to lift he slipped sts back up? Or did you really unknit?

Next time, when you reach the dropped st, use a hook to lift the dropped st up row by row to your needle and then you won’t have to tink. Check out “Correcting a stitch without unraveling rows” under Basic Techniques.

Welcome to KH!! This is a great place to learn much and make friends!! I used to knit a long time ago, but not properly, and since I’ve found KH, so many people have helped. I often sit and read the how-to’s and patterns etc. here. I love it–Amy should put it all in a big book for us!! It would make it easier for me to read it cause I don’t have a laptop and sitting here is uncomfortable! :frowning:

No I didn’t tink. I knit down and picked up with a crochet hook. But it was brutal - the twisted stitches were VERY hard to redo that way. It now looks very wonky in those spots, but since it will get felted I’m hoping it will still look okay. We’ll see.
