What do you mean twisting?
You mean twisting so that you need to untwist it? It comes from the way you wrap it around the needle, and when you turn at the end of the row if you always turn the same direction. So alternate the direction you turn it, and you can just untwist it by holding the ball and let the work dangle or hold the work and let the ball dangle…
Yup, suzeeq is right on! I cured the ‘twisties’ by doing that: alternating the way I turn my work around!
Thanks to you both - I’ll try it right now! I thought I might be starting with the wrong end from the ball, so I’d tried both ends, with the same
result. Some yarns seem to twist more than others - I’m using a Noro
yarn right now, and I have to untwist after every 20 stitches!
I haven’t had a lot of problems with my yarn twisting, so give this a try and see if it helps: if you have your yarn in an outside-pull ball (so it bounces around a lot more) your yarn should twist less (it should untwist itself as it bounces around).
Wow! You have to untwist the yarn every 20 stitches? :??
That seems like a lot!
Depending on how much knitted fabric you have on your needles, I mean if it isn’t too far along, you could try this (I have done this before, too): stand up, lay your knitting on the seat, hold the yarn about 2 feet from the knitting, suspend the knitting in the air and let it twirl and spin as it untwists itself.
Ya know, sometimes when I’ve cast on a bunch of stitches I notice that the yarn inbetween the skein and the needle is all hinky twisty. Before knitting row 1, I hang the needle in the air by holding the skein up and allow the needle w/ cast on to spin and spin to untwist!
Am I making sense?
I see why I didn’t get it…I’ve never had twisty yarn that I was aware of. I think I do turn from different directions frequently so that must be it. Interesting.
I think you might be holding your yarn too tight. The yarn is pushing its twist down as you work and what is being knitted has no twists. Does that make sense? Just try to loosen your hold on the yarn and see if that works!
I had the same problem. I was having to turn the ball or the work to straighten it out. I, too, felt it was because I was knitting so tightly that the used yarn was straightening and “pushing the twist” further down into the working yarn. Alternating the way you turn the work also helps, though I always forget, and just turn it without thinking (probably the same way everytime). Something else which may matter: When we pull off more yarn, we all just “yank.” Maybe if we unroll it more like a roll of toilet paper so that the ball rolls around in a controlled fashion, as opposed to, think about holding the roll of toilet paper stationary in one hand and, taking the end of toilet paper in your thumb and forefinger of the other hand, release a length by going around and around, and you’ll see that it twists. Sorry if this doesn’t make any sense! I haven’t tried it with yarn.
Right now, I am using both ends of my yarn held together to make a double strand. This causes the two strands to twist around each other a bit as I am knitting, so every so often I re-orient the ball to straighen them out. But the good news is: each individual strand is not twisted by itself, so maybe all this is a “turning issue” (then again, I used to untwist several times per row, so, I don’t know).
I’m just “thinking out loud” again…
