How do I figure number of skeins?

I noticed that the free Rebecca patterns don’t say how many skeins I might need. how do I figure this out?

I also noticed that for the one pattern that I downloaded (wrap sweater).

In the materials section the number of grams needed is listed. So you need to know how many grams are in one skien of the yarn listed for the pattern to figure out how many total skeins you need. If you are not using the same yarn, it becomes more tricky.

Which pattern are you looking at?

Does it give yardage? I usually go by yardage rather than weight. Similarly if you were sewing a skirt, you would purchase fabric by the yardage rather than the weight of the fabric.

This is how the instructions are listed in the pattern that I have.

GGH Yarn SOFT KID: 70% super kid mohair, 25% polyamide, 5% wool (about 137 m/25 g)

Materials: yarn GGH, quality “SOFT
KID”, 250(275) g #55 rose.
5 mm needles, or size to obtain
gauge.

well if i read that right it says that there are 25 grams on one skein/hank. and it looks like it says you need 250 grams which means to me you need 10 skeins/hanks of that particular yarn for the smaller size.

This is what the knitting garden lists for that yarn.

GGH
Soft Kid
List Price: $11.50
OUR PRICE: $10.95

70% Super Kid
25% Nylon
5% Wool
Approx. 154 yds/25g
Gauge: 4.5 sts/1in
Needle: US 5-6

I think it is telling you that you need 10+ of them.

Thanks for confirming that. My math came out the same. I am not the original poster, so I do not know what her pattern says. I just gave mine as an example that Rebecca only listed by weight not yardage.

lol see what happens when i am not paying attention…i just thought we were getting the info on the original pattern question!

(i don’t know what a rebecca pattern is!)

Yes, it is the pink wrap (which I may do in another color). I didn’t realize that the “250 g” was the info I needed!

10+ balls of yarn. WOW. At that price I may have to look for a substitute. I saw a cheap FAKE “mohair-like” blend of Red Heart at Michaels–nice enough for a $5 skein. I will have to check it out more closely. Although I have noticed that I tend to like the colors that are offered in the more expensive yarns better. Go figure.

Thanks for your help!

Yeah! Maybe we should post the sweater as a KAL! I bought Colinette Mohair in Chamois (a multi color) for mine. At the LYS it was on sale for $20 for 100 grams. I bought 3. I think you can get it for less online. I haven’t started or even swatched yet. I have to finish my Mom’s birthday present before I start anything else.

I think a KAL is a great idea!
