However, I’m a little lost with how to proceed to step 6 from step 5.
This is what I have so far.
Do I need to put the needles back where the work split off into front and back then continue with the front panel there? Would I need to cut the yarn off? Or join a different ball on to make the front panel in step 6 of this pattern?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Yes put the needles back to where the front and back split off and continue the front panel.
Have you used the schematic at the end of the pattern? You have the front sts on the needle. Cut the yarn strand at the back and attach to the neck edge on what the pattern calls the right front sts (step 6) and knit up to the neck edge. Follow the directions to shape the neck with k2tog every other row 3 times and eventually add buttonholes.
(The convention is usually that left and right are defined as how the sweater is worn but the pattern is following its own labeling.)
