I want to adapt this stitch to a hat in the round. How would I change it?
Knit rows 1 and 3
For rows 2 and 4, follow the directions, but purl and slip the stitch with the yarn in front.
Okay, rows 1 and 3 will still be knit, rows 2 and 4 would be done in reverse order and purled instead of knit.
Row 2: p1, * sl 1 wyif, p1 - repeat.
Row 4: p1, * p1, sl 1 wyif - repeat end with p2.
I think, you may not need the edge sts… Another way to figure it out is cast on a small number, like 11 and work it flat for a couple inches to see how it goes, then you can figure out what you need a little easier.

Tried about 8 rows in the round, it doesn’t look like the photo, and I frogged it. Should I leave out the end stitches?
Yes, I think all you need are the purl 1 and slip sts.

It’s not coming out right. I’m not getting that waffle effect, just alternating lines of dashes, offset by 1.

Alternating lines of dashes (from the yarn in back and the slip st) is correct. It’s what you get when you do the pattern flat, too. It doesn’t look like the picture as far as I can tell but maybe that’s due to the angle of the photo?
Are you adding a p1 to round four? It looks like it’s staggered one stitch off from round two. In the pattern on about.com, you have…

Or they posted the wrong picture. but it looked like something my cat might have done to a knitted hat, and it wasn’t my cup of tea. I was expecting something with a waffle effect. I’ll look through some other stitches.
SuzeeQ and Ingrid advised me to omit the end stitches, because it’s in the round. But it’s still staggered by 1 stitch.
I wondered if they have the RS and WS mixed up. What does the other side of it look like KatzKnitter?
I think they used the wrong photo. The back looked a lot like garter stitch,. But I’ve already frogged it, and I’ve found a Waffle stitch that’s more waffly.
It’s possible they used the wrong photo. About is usually pretty good but whenever there’s human in the equation, there’s always human error added. Also, they have so many patterns up… if that one was added when a huge amount of them were, it’s possible they added it up wrong… it’s easy to get mixed up when you’re doing a lot of the same thing over and over… eventually, it all looks the same and you get all cross-eyed… yeah… not pretty
