Holes in my socks... leaky gusset?!

I hope someone can help me.
I’m knitting a top-down sock from a pattern that was recommended specifically because it carries the ribbing down the instep and across the top of the foot. Apparently this was meant to help me to avoid holes at the join on the gusset.

After I’ve picked up my first set of stitches off the heel, I have to M1, then knit in rib pattern across instep, bar increase, then M1 before I PU the stitches on the other side of the heel flap.

It seems like it’s a gamble. I’ve knitted six socks now and it seems there’s no rhyme or reason for me getting a hole at the top of my gusset. Some have it, some don’t.

Can any pros out there give me a hand with this? Any pointers or suggestions. Also, if there’s no way to avoid it, what’s the best way to sew up the hole once the sock has been knitted?

Thank you!

I am not sure if this would help but I tend to knit through the back loop of the stitches I picked up and it seems to help me a little.

Sometimes I get a small hole on the top too and I don’t know how, but usually I take some scrap yarn and sort of pull two stitches together in the back, like sew the hole closed.

I would too love some feedback on those darn holes!

When I pick up the sts for the gusset I try to keep the yarn tight and the needle close to the sock…also the little v shape between the pu sts and instep I try to pick up right there as well…when you PU sts also you want to pick up the 2 strands of that slipped st… not just the one strand…my gussets are worked pretty tight the first few rounds and even then sometimes I still have to go in and close up a hole…what I do is a duplicate stitch and with a tug it usually will close it up…:happydance:
