Hi everyone!
I’ve turned into this sock knitting fool lately but I’ve been running into the same problem with every one. When I get done turning the heel and I pick up my stitches I notice a few rows later that I get a hole at each crevice or corner of the sock. (I don’t know if I explained myself well enough or not) :pout: - Anyways how do I keep these holes from happening?
Pick up an extra stitch or two at the corner. When you are decreasing for the gusset you can just do an extra round or two to get back to the correct number of stitches.
I’ve tried this before but I just get a different hole (or a bigger one). Is there any other fool proof way? :wall:
Not sure… maybe someone else can help though.
Maybe you could just seew the hole when you’re done if you’ve tried picking up extra stitches.
Have you tried knitting the stitches you picked up through the back loop? I’ve read that helps sometimes.
Thanks everybody. I’ve been sneakily sewing them, but I guess its not illegal! :teehee:
Thank you again and I’ll make sure to try out some of your ideas. xxx
Hi there
I’m a new sock knitter too and I’ve been having the same problem, it’s been doing my head in! I’ve tried a few things and have asked a few people about it, but still can’t seem to stop it from happening, so I’ve been sewing the holes.
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one with this problem!
I have the same problem. I sometimes dig deeper than the first stitch and pick up a stitch from further underneath. There’s still a hole, but not as big (sometimes). You could also knit tube socks? haha. Not very fun then though.
I’m glad I’m not the only one!
i’ve had the same problem and had success with picking up one extra stitch. glad you found a solution that works for you.
No need to sneak. Whatever works is a legitimate solution to a knitting problem. There is no cheating in knitting! :teehee:
I know nothing about this topic as such but being interested in trying circular needles and using more than two needles I was reading a section of tips and there was a comment about a ‘ladder’ being created as you work between the needles and the comment was that people often need to additionally ‘tighten’ the yard at this section otherwise you naturally create that ladder.
Is there transferability to this issue you’ve talking about and it could be that for that stitch you need to tighten or even change needle size (if you can’t eliminate the problem)?? I’ve never made socks so I’m just throwing the idea into the pool.
Thanks for the great ideas! I may switch needle sizes and see if that does the trick. If not I can always go back to sewing it. :figureditout:
I always have a hole on ONE SIDE of my socks! :wall:
Weird…right? So, I’m doing something right on the right side, and something wrong on the left side. :teehee:
Whats up with this one hole business?!?!?
:teehee:
Is the hole at the top of the gusset? Maybe it’s where you slipped the first stitch? I wonder if you knit that first one normally then slipped the rest it would be tighter at that point…
Thats sounds like a possibility - I’m gonna give that one a try and get back to you on it.
You know, Jan…I think that it’s the slipped stitch at the start of the row when I’m working on the heel. You know, the part where you go back and forth on the heel? I think I’m just going to do a purl or knit for that first stitch from now on. Maybe that will fix my one hole problem.
