Hi new here...need some help with a baby blanket

hi, i’ve been knitting since last november and so far i LOVE it. i’ve done several projects, some hats, scarfs, a sock and i felt confident enough to try and knit a baby blanket for a good friend who is expecting. i am working on a pattern that i have crocheted many many times but i am bit confused about how to go about it with knitting needles. the pattern is from “vogue knitting, baby blankets” and it’s worked from the inside out. i’ve finished the center pocket and i’ve picked up stitches all around it but this is where i get lost. am i supposed to pick up the stitches from one side, knit those stitches and then pick up from the other side and knit those (see inst. below)? if i do this then i would have to break the yarn in order to to be able to pick up the stiches at the botttom of the pocket :?? the other question is, now that i have picked up the stiches i have 4 dpns on, do i continue using the dpns (using a fifth needle)? or do i use a circular needle? there is a note in the instructions saying to change to circular needle when necessary. can i really knit a flat banket in the round with my circular needle? can someone please shed some light to this which is boggling me :thinking:.

here’s what the instructions say;

With RS facing, dpn and MC, *pick up 1 st in corner of pocket and pm, pick up and k 28 sts evenly along left side of pocket (picking up through both thickness); rep from *twice, picking up sts along other two sides, pick up 1 st in corner, pm, k28 sts from holder—116 sts. join.

one other question…“join” ???

THANKS!

It sounds like you’re on the right track. I think that working this on a circular needle is an excellent idea–you will get to the point that there are too many stitches on the dpns. When you join, it’s when you start to knit in the round.

Check out Amy’s videos on circular knitting-dpns and circs, as well as magic loop.

thanks ingrid! i’ve watched all the videos and they have been extremely helpful, i just didn’t know you can knit a flat blanket in the round. i guess everything is possible! thanks again!
