I found this pattern but its hard to und. it.So i need some help.
This is pattern:
GARTER ST (back and forth on needle):
K sts on all rows.
HAT:
Piece is first worked back and forth on circular needle and then in the round.
Cast on 86-94 sts with on circular needle size 4 mm / US 6. K 1 row from WS, then work as follows: 6 sts in GARTER ST - see explanation above, * K 2, P 2 *, repeat from -, finish with K 2 and 6 sts in garter st.
Continue rib and in garter st in each side until piece measures 4 cm / 1½’’. Switch to circular needle size 5 mm / US 8. Now work as follows: 6 sts in garter st, A.1 over the next 74-82 sts and finish with 6 sts in garter st. When piece measures 8 cm / 3 1/8’’, bind off the first 6 sts on needle, then work in the round with A.1 over all sts = 80-88 sts.
When piece measures 20-21 cm / 8"-8 1/4’’, work in GARTER ST - see explanation above - until finished measurements.
Work in garter st, AT THE SAME TIME dec 12 sts evenly every 3rd round a total of 5 times = 20-28 sts remain on round.
Now K2 tog around, cut the thread and pull it through the remaining sts. Tighten tog and fasten.
The hat measures approx. 25-26 cm / 9 3/4"-10 1/4" vertically. Sew 2 buttons on to flap at the bottom of hat, sew through both layers.
Something i und. but something not.
What mean: then work as follows: 6 sts in GARTER ST?
and : * K 2, P 2 *, repeat from - ??
I would appreciate if anyone can help me to und. this pattern.
Hi & welcome to KH. You will repeat the instructions between * * until the last 6 sts.
Knit the first and last 6 sts of each row and work your k2p2 rib in between.
K6, *k2, p2, k2,p2 (keep doing k2,p2) until you have 6 sts left, knit the last 6 stitches.
Next row will be the same, knit 6, work k2,p2 rib until the last 6 sts, knit 6. (If your rib comes out starting with purls, then do p2,k2)
Thank You for explanation. Now i really und. that part well.
This part:
Continue rib and in garter st in each side until piece measures 4 cm / 1½’’.
Does it mean just to do knit until reach 4cm??
I am trying to und. part by part, so after this i will probably ask for Your help again about something in this pattern. Hope i wont be too boring…
Now i finished work till this part:
Switch to circular needle size 5 mm / US 8. Now work as follows: 6 sts in garter st, A.1 over the next 74-82 sts and finish with 6 sts in garter st.
Place a marker where you begin knitting on the circular needle and where you join to knit in the round (instead of back and forth).
Read chart A1 starting at the bottom right and working the sts from right to left. Since you’re working in the round at this point you only work the rows of the chart from right to left. When you get to the beginning of the round marker, move up to the next row of boxes.
The open boxes are knit sts and the X boxes are purl sts.
Round 1 is a repeat of k1,p1,k1,p1.
Round 2 is the same.
Round 3 is all knit sts.
Round 4 is all purl sts.
I came to this part now:
When piece measures 8 cm / 3 1/8’’, bind off the first 6 sts on needle, then work in the round with A.1 over all sts = 80-88 sts.
It says to work on circular needle size 5 mm / US 8, but i dont know how to do in round on this needle.
That’s too long a circular needle. For a hat you need more like a 16" or (40cm). That way the sts won’t be so stretched out that you can’t work them. Here’s a link to other methods of small diameter circular knitting. http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques
Now i made pause with this hat because i need to buy appropriate needle for round knitting and i start with this neck warmer.
Now this 1st part i und. and that is where buttons goes right?
And do i have to sew these two pieces? And how?
Worked back and forth on needle. Cast on 62 sts on circular needle size 4 mm / US 6.
K 1 row from WS, then work as follows - from RS: 6 sts in garter st, K 2, * P 2, K 2 *, repeat from - and finish with 6 sts in garter st. Continue like this.
Just i dont und. why bind off just 6 sts from both sides and not other 50 sts?? Is that because i will sew from it other part??
On this other part i dont und this:
Cast on 6 sts on circular needle size 5 mm / US 8, work sts from one piece back on needle, work sts from the other piece back on needle and cast on 6 sts at end of row = 112 sts.
When says: -sew on 4 buttons through both layers- means that i dont have to make button hole??
The first part of the pattern is for the part that sits on your chest and back. These parts don’t have buttons. You don’t sew these pieces together. Bind off only the 6sts on each side. In the second part you’ll add on the bands for the buttons and join the two pieces as you knit the section that goes aaround your neck.
Don’t bind off the 50sts on either of the two first pieces. These 50sts will form part of the neck so you want live sts on the needle.
Here you start by casting on 6 new sts then knit across one set of 50sts, work across the second set of 50sts and cast on 6 new sts. Yes, these two set of 6sts form the overlapping buttonband but there are no buttonholes. You just sew on buttons through both layers.
Would you please edit the pattern quote so we don’t have copyright problems? The link to the pattern is very helpful and sufficient.
Thanks, salmonmac. I might do this pattern and it wasn’t making sense to me, I just couldn’t get my head around how it goes together. Now I see how it works.
I thought that if I got to that point in the actual knitting I could figure it out or someone could help but it really bugs me when I can’t figure it out. I’m really glad you did, the OP will now be able to continue. You rock!
