Help!

I got a new sweater pattern a couple of weeks ago. I had a hysterectomy last week, so I have lots of time to work on it, but I am completely lost! It is a Chris Bylsma design and is beautiful but I’ve never seen a pattern written like this.

This is what it looks like:

  • l l - 8
  • l l - 7
    • l l 6
    • l l 5
      l - - l 4
      l - - l 3
      l l - - 2
      l l - - 1
      4321

Then it says on the side
KEY
l knit on right side, purl on wrong side
-purl on right side, knit on wrong side

I have NO idea how to do this.
Can someone help?

Thanks so much!
Cathy

It’s basically a chart. It is composed of 8 rows, 4 stitches wide. You start, like a chart, on the right, reading right to left on the first row. If it wasn’t almost 4 am, I’d write it out for you, but it is and I’d probably get it wrong.

4 am!!
It’s almost 11pm here and my brain isn’t working so well. I’m impressed that you’re awake at 4am!

I guess what confuses me is the right and wrong side key.
Also, when I do row 1, I go from right to left;when I do row 2, do I go left to right? If you could help (some time that works best for you) by writing out enough for me to get the idea, I would SO appreciate it.

Thanks a bunch,
Cathy

hat it looks like:

Hey,

There is another part of the pattern and I’m afraid if I do it myself I’ll mess it up. I’m beginning to think I’m not smart enough to be a knitter! Do you know why they wrote the pattern like this? It appears that the odd numbered rows are the right side and the even numbered rows are the wrong side, but if this is true, why don’t they just write the chart like that (a much simpler way) rather than the way they did this one? I’ve been knitting since I was in the 5th grade (40+ years now) but I have never taken any classes. Would I learn these things in a class?

Would you mind helping me with this one as well? I would be so grateful.:aww:
By the way, I have been working on a sleeve with the pattern you wrote out for me and it is really very pretty!:happydance:
The other part of the pattern is:

  • l l - 8
  • l l - 7
    l l - - 6
    l l - - 5
    l - - l 4
    l - - l 3
    • l l 2
    • l l 1
      4 321
l knit on right side, purl on wrong side
-purl on right side, knit on wrong side

Thanks so much!

It’s very normal for the odd rows to be the RS and the even ones the WS, most patterns do that. This isn’t the usual way to write out a chart, unless it’s in a graph form and you’re just copying the sts as they appear there.

1 - k2, p2
2 - p2, k2
3 - k1, p2, k1
4 - p1, k2, p1
5 - p2, k2
6 - p2, k2
7 - p1, k2, p1
8 - k1, p2, k1

Hey,

I was trying to figure out the pattern using the help that I received a couple of days ago and the help you gave me (so I might be able to do things like this in the future). I have one question. If rows 5 and 6 are written exactly the same and one is right and one is wrong, should they work out sort of the opposite of each other?

Thanks.
Cathy

Yes. I think this pattern stitch is a double moss stitch, or it may be called a double seed st.

The pattern I’m using calls this a bias moss stitch. I had heard of a moss stitch but I don’t remember having done a pattern with this stitch before.
Thanks so much for your help!!
