I’m having trouble with my wrap and turn. I’m pretty sure I’m doing it right, but the thing is the pattern. The pattern wants you to do a wrap and turn twice in the same place before you turn. The result is that you do not pass back over that area again to pick up the wrap and conceal it. You knit to 24, slip 1 and turn and then purl to the end and turn. But you do this TWICE, so that the second time you are doing the wrap and turn in the same place. I get a little hole and cannot figure out what to do. Pls help.
Back shaping
Next 2 rows Sl 1, k to last 24 sts, turn, sl 1, p to last 24 sts, turn.
Next 2 rows Sl 1, k to last 18 sts, turn, sl 1, p to last 18 sts, turn.
Next 2 rows Sl 1, k to last 12 sts, turn, sl 1, p to last 12 sts, turn.
Next 2 rows Sl 1, k to last 6 sts, turn, sl 1, p to last 6 sts, turn.
Those instructions seem to miss the wrap part of wrap and turn. If you just turn and slip the first stitch you will always end up with a hole.
Have a look at this video about wrap and turn:
As you can see there is both a wrapping step and a step for picking up the wraps. Suzanne is knitting the first stitch instead of slipping it, but it is fully okay to slip the first stitch as in your pattern. Most of the time I also do slip the first stitch if I do wrap and turn. Then there is also the step with picking up the wraps and in your case you will have two wraps around the same stitch that you need to pick up.
I don’t see that you should be doing the turn twice at the same place.
Next 2 rows:
Row 1 Sl 1, k to last 24 sts, turn,
Row 2 sl 1, p to last 24 sts, turn.
There’s usually a following row where you knit over the entire row and then you would pick up the wraps as engblom has indicated. What is the name of your pattern?
I think @salmonmac got the right interpretation. Like this it is more like a normal neck shaping.
I was thinking it is strange to do the same thing twice and honestly, I am not very used to read patterns as most of the time I knit freely without following any pattern. I also got confused because of the “Next 2 rows” prefix.
This is the section I am struggling with. I cannot seem to explain it well, but you are knitting 24 stitches and turning for 2 rows and then knitting 18 stitches and turning for 2 rows. So you never get back to the wrapped turns at 24 stitches because you are only going to 18 stitches on the next row. That gap is not picked up. I’m having a terrible time. On all the videos, they seem to go back over the wrap and pick it up, but how can you do that if you are turning before you get to that last wrap? Its hard to explain and maybe I have it all wrong but I’ve been over and over it and tried a myriad of things and I cannot figure out why I cannot deal with these holes.
Next 2 rows: Sl 1, k to last 24 sts, turn, sl 1, p to last 24 sts, turn.
Next 2 rows Sl 1, k to last 18 sts, turn, sl 1, p to last 18 sts, turn. [so no going back over the wrap and turn at 24 stitches in the previous row]
Next 2 rows Sl 1, k to last 12 sts, turn, sl 1, p to last 12 sts, turn.
Next 2 rows Sl 1, k to last 6 sts, turn, sl 1, p to last 6 st
What is the name of your pattern?
Yes, the rows you quote don’t go back over the wraps and turns but what are the next 2 rows after the short rows.
There’s usually a following row where you knit over the entire row and then you would pick up the wraps.
Thanks for your comment. The video seems to help. I am wrapping when I turn and the second time I pick up the wrap instead of slip the stitch. I don’t know since I stayed up late working on it and have to try it again. Love the pattern but this section really gets me. I’m not adept enough to knit without a pattern. Would not mind that kind of talent!
Its a Debbie Bliss pattern. Because of your help and comments, I realized I was reading the pattern wrong. After I had read it two million times. Thanks so much! I really do appreciate your prompt replies and assistance. Here is the pattern number: 10313540_Flower-Baby-Jumper,-Bloomers,-Cardigan,-Sandals-&-Bonnet-in-Debbie-Bliss-DB310-_2.
