I am knitting a guernsey in the round. the pattern came with the wool so is not a commercial pattern. I have reached a stage where I am doing neck gussets (whatever they are). I have stitches on the front shoulder needle and stitches on the back. Then there are 26 stitches in the middle. The pattern reads:
Row 1 Work 26 stitches in k2 p2 rib then k1 st from back shoulder stitches
Row 2 p3 *k2 p2, repeat from * to end, p1 from front shoulder stitches
Row 3 K3 *p2 k2 repeat from * to last 3 stitches, k2 take 1 st from back shoulder sts, k 2tog
Row 4 p3 *k2 p2 repeat from * to last 3 sts p3 p1 from front shoulder sts. . Continue in this pattern for a further 20 rows until the back gusset is 6sts wide and the front gusset is 12 sts wide. Reading this, what on earth is row 5?
This is as clear as mud to me and I am ready to throw the whole thing in the bin.
Oh no, no way you’re goint to knit a guernsey and then toss it. Do you have a link to the pattern or a pattern name? Is this knit top down?
You’re going to keep knitting one more stitch from the back shoulder sts or purling one more from the front shoulder sts on rows 1 and 2. Then on rows 3 you’ll knit together one stitch from the needle and one from the back shoulder. On row 4 you’ll purl together on stitch from the needle and one from the front shoulder sts.
Row 5 will be similar to row 1. knit one more stitch from the back shoulder sts.
Nooooo! I don’t have a link. It is called Runswick and knitted bottom up so I have invested hours and hours in it. I bought the wool and the pattern in Whitby. The pattern is the seller’s copyright. But it just doesn’t make sense to me. That 4th row doesn’t have a purl together st at the end of the row. So is row 5 knit 4 etc etc?
ps thank you for answering - I have been working on this for weeks and weeks.
You’re right, no p2tog on row 4. So row 5 would begin p4 then continue in rib to the end and knit one from the back shoulder sts.
ooooo no that is way too complicated for me! Mine is much much plainer. See here but the picture isn’t very clear.

I hope I haven’t let you all down with something so basic. xxx
Oh, I like that. The one I found I don’t like as much. Let us down? No way! I’m curious about things like this, others are too, and it might help someone who knows what you’re doing help you out. Thanks for the link.
It is knitted in 5ply which I had never heard of. I was so pleased till I got to this bit.
My OH has just remarked that the internet is a wonderful thing. There is always someone somewhere in the world who will help you. xxx
The picture is a great help. For row 5, the other possiblity is to incorporate the sts that are added to the main needle into the k2p2 rib rather than p4. This is what the picture is showing, a continuation of the rib. For row 6 you’d also incorporate the st from the front into the rib pattern and so on with the subsequent rows. Very good looking sweater.
Hi, 5ply is the traditional yarn for guernsey sweaters (Guernsey is one of the Channel Islands, between England and France ) and is usually knitted with a tight gauge which makes them shower-proof. They are traditionally fishermen’s sweaters.
