Help with Tabard pattern pls!

I’m trying a new pattern, which a kind lady at the yarn shop shared with me, but it seems a little sparse! I’m knitting a tabard (like a vest but with split sides, no arm holes), and have knitted the back no problem, but i’m now at the neck line and the pattern states;
“Then knit (16) sts cast off the middle sts till (19) sts remain knit them in pattern as before Then knit till neck hole and cast on (19) sts knit till end of the row. Cont down other side till work is same as front.”

This confuses me because;

  1. There are 51 stitches. So I would have thought i would knit the 16, cast of 19, then still have 16 remaining (for the other side). But the pattern states to case of middle sts ‘till 19’ remain. If I do that, one side is 3 stitches more than the other. Is that right?
  2. I’m assuming what I actually have to do is knit the 16, cast off 19, then knit 16. Turn work round, knit 16, cast on 19, knit 16, then knit the front. does that sound right? is that enough for a neck hole?
    (there’s a turtle neck later, where I pick up stitches, but I think I get that bit.

Thank you for all your help,
K

Welcome to KH. What’s the name of your pattern and the desinger? With the info given I would guess that 19 is a typo and it should be 16 sts remain. Or 16 at the start of the row could be a typo and should be 19.

I agree it sounds like an error. My guess would be 16 for the shoulders and 19 for the neck.
Is there a clue in the number of stitches to pick up for the neck later? Does it give a number to pick up front and back, or a total number, and does the number fit better with 19+19 or with 16+16?

I’ve emailed the designer to see if she can clarify! Thanks for the tip!

It does say cast on 19, so I have to assume the neck portion is 19 stitches, and the remainder (32), have to be distributed evenly on both sides!
I’m going to give it a go!
Wish me luck!

This is what you need to do. It will work.

Good luck.
Let us know how you get on.

Welcome to the forum!
My question is the one you initially raise. Depending on the stitch gauge, is 38sts (19+19) enough for a neck opening? Picked up sts are inevitably going to narrow that opening a bit.
What is your stitch gauge and what weight yarn are you using?
