Hi I’m trying knitting socks for the first time using the Diagonal Cross Rib Socks Pattern by Ann Budd. I have included a photo of what the socks look like.
I am currently stuck on how to start the heel flap portion of the pattern.
The pattern states:
“K13, turn work around, sl 1 pwise with yarn in front (wyf), p33—34 heel sts ”
I am confused on how to start after turning the work around. Do I do the sl 1 pwise on the 13th knit stitch that I just completed? i.e. Does this mean that the 34 purl stitches that I do include the 13 knit stitches that I started with?
OR
Do I start the sl 1 pwise on the stitch that would have been the 14th knit stitch if I had continued to work in the round? i.e. The first stitch that is on the opposite needle?
Also what would the purpose of the initial 13 knit stitches be?
Knit 13sts then turn. The stitch that is slipped is the last stitch, the 13th that you just knit on the previous row. It’s now the first stitch of this new row. Then purl the next 33sts.
When you purl the 33sts that will include the 13sts knit on the previous row.
The 13sts are likely finishing up the heel sts and getting you to the beginning of the row with the full heel sts. Maybe you can quote the row or two before this one to be sure. Don’t give us a large portion of the pattern due to designer copyright, please.
Thanks so much for clarifying how to start the heel flap.
Right before the heel flap I finished the last part of the leg portion, which was the 8th row of a 8 row pattern repeat with a total of 70 stitches in each row. Also for each row a variation of 7 stitches (5k and 2p) was repeated. Would this information help with clarifying the purpose of the first 13 knit stitches or would you need more detailed pattern information?
It seems like the first 13 knit sts are just getting the 34 heel sts in position to knit back and forth. It moves the yarn strand from the likely beginning of round marker to one end of the heel flap and keeps the instep sts centered.
