Help with sleeves on 5 hr baby sweater

I am working on the 5 Hr Baby Sweater (my first sweater!) and have a questions about how to work the sleeves.

The pattern is the gailbable pattern for a baby boy 5 hr sweater (I can’t post links as I am a new member)

After row 31, I have knit 22 stitches and put it on a holder. I cut the yarn and left a long tail, CO 2 stitches and knit across the next 27 stitches.

The pattern continues as follows:
CO 2 sts, Working with another set of needles and on these 31 sts, work in stockinette stitch for 22 rows.

So do I cut the yarn again, CO and then just work back and forth on these 31 stitches?

Help!

Thanks,
Sasha

What she is telling you is to do the sleeves 1st. What she has done is have you knit the front to the sleeve area, since the rest of the sweater is on your needles, that is why she is asking you to use new needles.

I have made more of these sweaters than you will believe (check my link for my pictures), there are a lot of versions for this pattern. I don’t like what she is having you do so here is what I would suggest if you can loop knit (if you have circular needles). If not dis regard my 1st paragraph below and go to the 2nd paragraph.

(If you have circular needles and can loop knit)You have knit the front, then I would take a piece of yarn and a needle and put the sleeve stitches on the yarn (to be knit later). Then I would add 2 sts to my needle and continue to knit the back. When you get to the other sleeve, put it also on a piece of spare yarn, (and knit later), then add 2 sts again (for the armhole) then knit the other front. Work the body pattern from there. When you have the body done, pick up the stitches from one of the arms which you previously put on a piece of yarn, and work down the sleeve as instructed in the pattern making sure you pick up a few stitches from the armpit of the body of the sweater (this eliminates a hole at armpit). If you do get a hole in that area because you are a new knitter, don’t worry about it… just make sure when you start your sleeve that you have a long enough tail to weave any holes you may have…

(If you have straight needles and cannot loop knit) Then you will have to work the sleeve back and forth like the pattern. Then work the back across to the next sleeve, knit the 2nd sleeve like the 1st, then when that is done, pick up and knit the last front and follow body pattern.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly!

Just so I understand correctly, since I have finished the (right side) front and (right) sleeve, should I cut the yarn and CO 2 new stitches to finish knitting across the back etc? Or just continue with the same yarn?

Also I would then need to put the left sleeve and front on a holder to finish the back - correct?

Thank you again! I so appreciate your help!!!

Jan, how do you get that Ravelry link on your signature? I love it.

Not sure what you are asking me… so I’m going to copy and paste and add my comments in red below…

'Just so I understand correctly, since I have finished the (right side) front and (right) sleeve, should I cut the yarnwhere are you cutting yarn? and CO 2 new stitches to finish knitting across the back etc? Or just continue with the same yarn? if you have yarn at the start use that to go across the back, or start with new.

Also I would then need to put the left sleeve and front on a holder to finish the back - correct?Yes I use a piece of old yarn

I tried to post the link initially but the “rules” said I didn’t have enough posts yet… Hopefully now I do!

Thank you!!!

Sorry if I am being confusing!!! I am responding to your note in CAPS below:

'Just so I understand correctly, since I have finished the (right side) front and (right) sleeve, should I cut the yarn where are you cutting yarn? IT SEEMED I WAS SUPPOSED TO CUT THE YARN AFTER THE FIRST 29 STITCHES (FOR THE SLEEVE), CAST ON 2 NEW STITCHES AND THEN FINISH THE SLEEVE (31 STITCHES)? and CO 2 new stitches to finish knitting across the back etc? Or just continue with the same yarn? if you have yarn at the start use that to go across the back, or start with new.

No you don’t need to cut the yarn to work this section.

Thanks to everyone for your help!!! I now know how to cast on in the middle of my work without cutting the yarn and am on my way to finishing the 5 hr baby sweater. Thank you!
