help with (simultaneous?) double crochet border

hi all!

after years of kicking and screaming… finally working on a crochet pattern, Ravelry: Ruby Hexagon Blanket pattern by Nova Seals . i know, i’m shocked too.

doing a baby size, and have 23 granny-hexagons done through round 6. for round 7, i can either double crochet around each, one at time, and then seam the whole thing together, or preferably, i can simultaneously double crochet the 7th rounds on adjoining hexagons. either option is suggested by the pattern author, but… she doesn’t explain how to do the simultaneous version, and looks like she hasn’t responded to questions on ravelry in about 12 years.

so… does anyone know of a good tutorial or two for how to join granny-style shapes that way?

many thanks!

I finally came across the video I couldn’t find. You might try this. You might need some adjustment of number of stitches in the corners. I think I’ll try this on the hex cardi I’m not working on if I ever get the granny square skull pieces done.
If you hate joining granny squares, try this!

Great to see you back! Fortunately I’ve has a fortifying cup of coffee so the shock of the crochet pattern has worn off. Love to see a photo when you finish this blanket.

So far… (Apologies for the skew, literally standing on the bed and holding onto a window frame in order to get all the hexies in shot)

Very neat! The method GG posted is a good one to try (this from a non-crocheter so you know what it’s worth). I depend on her experience.

That’s iffy at best. Thanks for the compliment just the same. This is one method I intend to try on the project I’m not working on if I ever get back to it. I’ve never done a project that requires joining crochet motifs and go out of my way to avoid seams of any sort.

Never did granny squares before for blanket but did this doily using similar shapes peaces. Only I was attaching them crocheting last row. Maybe solution will be to work one more row attaching hexagons at corners.

Tryed my best to draw lines

Here’s another video, joining hexagons. You’ll finish the border on one hex completely, then start joining with the 2nd one. Due to the layout, you may not be able to do the whole thing continuously, because you might not end with the yarn where you need it to be to join another hex. But it’ll still be better than sewing them together!
