Help with scarf pattern

I received a free pattern for a scarf that looks incredibly easy. I am a new knitter, actually began the learning curve Jan 2014. So back to my easy scarf - using super bulky or bulky and size 17 needles the instructions say Holding yarn double CO 5 stitches. how do I hold the yarn double?? sounds like a dumb question but can’t get in my head how to double and then K1, P1. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Knitting Help!

When it asks you to hold yarn double you need to use either two skeins with one strand from each or use the inside and outside strand on a single skein. I think it’s easier with two skeins.

When knitting with two strands make sure you always knit the two strands as one stitch while you’re knitting so you don’t make increases you don’t want.

What pattern are you using?

The name is ‘The Necks Big Thing’ - can’t remember where it came from and didn’t keep the link, sorry. The instructions which I copied and pasted into a word document say: Holding yarn double and using #17 needles, cast on 7 sts, K1,P1 across row. Repeat this row(seed stitch) until piece measure 8-9" from beginning( approx. 15 rows)
Cut 32 lengths of fringe each 60 " or longer. Using large crochet hook, attach 4 quadruple strands of fringe on each end of seed stitch rectangle. Now sew end of rectangle together using mattress stitch to form a loop. I am moving to St Joseph Mo next week and thought this would be quick little going away surprise for my daughter - maybe I was wrong??
also different topic anyone out there in St Joseph, Mo or know yarn shops/knitting groups in the area??? Thanks so much Judy

With a 7 stitch row, this will go quickly I think. Seed stitch is great, it will lay flat and has a nice texture. Happy :knitting: and I hope your move goes smoothly.
