Help with Pom Poms

Is there anyone out there that knows how to make a pom pom. I have never had any luck with making them. I have wrapped the yarn around my fingers and recently I bought a pom pom magic and I couldn’t make one with that. I just can’t get the yarn tight enough around the windings and of course I’m left with a pomless pom pom. Any suggestions?

Pom poms are the devil. But here is what helps me- it doesn’t matter how tightly you wrap it around- you may just need to wrap it more times then you think so it’s nice & full. When you tie the piece around (between the cardboard or wheel or pieces- you know- the one you tie in a knot) try tying the knot, then removing the maker, then tying another knot tight tight tight to secure everything. Using really sharp scissors to cut the strands too helps.

Mine always need considerable trimming to have a round shape.

Here is a You Tube video that might help.

(I looked up a Pom Pom Magic- same idea except you hold it in your hand & it’s plastic.)

Good luck!

Yeah – I agree…you should be wrapping a LOT of wraps (I generally just use my fingers) and plan to do a lot of trimming.

Here’s a tutorial on finger poms, and here’s another! Note the difference in the fullness of the poms on each one as it relates to the wraps.

I might as well pipe in here with a link to my own Pom Pom tutorial! It’s true that you need to wrap and wrap and wrap way more than you think you will need, in order to get a nice full pom pom. Then trim trim trim trim to get it shaped closely enough to be a full, fluffy circle shape.

HERE is another picture of pom poms I made using the same method as in the tutorial. Very colorful!

To get the colors distributed evenly throughout the pom pom, wrap all colors together as one. So pull out a generous length of each color you want to use, put them together and wrap them around your hand at the same time. If you are using many colors at the same time, you won’t have to wrap as many times because you will have many strands going around at once. Does that make sense?

Pom poms add FUN to a finished project. With practice, you’ll get it right and be able to pom pom everything! FUN!

Thanks for the web sites. I’m ok with the winding of the yarn but I have a terrible time tying it. I have trouble getting it tight. Thanks again.

Help with tying it- borrow somebody’s finger to hold the first 1/2 of knot down tight while you tie the second 1/2- slipping it under their finger. That’s why I am married.

Of course that’s not WHY I am married.

He holds the hanks while I wind yarn too.
