Can anyone tell me what ply Wendy Carolette wool was? I have a pattern that is for a baby pram rug which is knitted using eight strands of this wool together on 3/4 inch diam needles?
Can you give us a link to the pattern? Based on what you wrote I assume it’s an old one though.
I can’t find mention of the yarn, but gauge and yarn weight is more accurate and helpful than ply these days. Ply can mean different weights.
It actually says 3/4" in diameter needles?? Again gauge would help with modern needle sizes.
The pattern is in a book that I have lost the front cover to.It has Material required 8 balls Wendy Carolette in Main Colour and 6 in Contrast. 1 pair 3/4inch diam needles, 1/2 yd Satin for lining. Size is 24inches x 18inches. Tension over st st using 8 strands of yarn 6sts to inch. The booklet was pubished in Paris and is about 25yrs old. I am at the moment crocheting another pram rug from the same book. Which is 60 squares with a rose in the middle of each square.
6 stitches/inch? Wow. I don’t know what you would use 8 strands together and get that gauge. That’s the gauge I’d get with sport weight yarn using about a US sz. 2 needle.
I just went to onlineconversion.com and it tells me that .75 in. = 19.05 mm. I think something’s been lost in the translation of this pattern. I suggest picking a yarn and needle size that produces a fabric you like, make sure that the pattern stitches are going to work for you, and just go for it. Is the exact size that important? If so then you’ll need to figure out just how many repeats of the pattern you’ll have and determine your cast on from that.
I hope you’ll post a photo of your crochet blanket.
6 sts to the inch? That’s about DK weight of a single strand. Possibly lace weight might work.
I agree with GG. If you’re just making a stroller blanket just find a yarn you like that knits to that gauge (appx DK weight) and needles that work that gauge. I’d guess appx a US 6.
I wonder if it’s meant to be a 2.75mm (US 2) or even a 3.75mm (US 5)? Either would work with a sport weight yarn (24sts/4inches).
