Hi there,
I’ve just recently gotten back into knitting and have a general idea of how to knit, did a bit as a kid under the guidance of my granny. However, I have never followed a pattern before, so this has gotten me a little confused.
Now, I’ve got the first four rows done aside from cast on, don’t know if that counts as a row. 3 rows of g-st, then the next row that starts with K 2 tog.
What’s confusing me is the one after that. It starts with just the word Purl. then goes on to say Rep. last 2 rows 4 times, dec. 1 st. beg. last row. Etc, hopefully you can see the picture of the pattern.
Does this mean Purl an entire row, then repeat the row starting with K 2 tog plus the row of purl 4 times, or does it mean something else?
Some help decoding this pattern would be lovely!
Thanks in advance
Welcome to KH and welcome back to knitting!
You’re right about the cast on. Don’t count it as a row.
Yes, purl the entire row and repeat the lace pattern row and the purl row 4 times.
It looks like a vintage pattern. Can you give us the pattern name?
Thank you for that! And the repeat 4 times means a total of the 2 rows 4 times right?
Yes, it is a vintage pattern! It’s called Nursery Knits. It’s from the Australian Women’s Weekly July 31 1968!
Exactly, 2 rows repeated 4 times (8 rows total).
Thank you for your help! I’ll post the finished product when I finish it

Hello again! The beanie (bonnet) is going well so far and I’m up to the top part.
It says (K 8, K 2 tog.) to last st., k 1.
I’ve followed this and I’m left with 2 stitches after K 8, so I’m confused about whether to knit both or knit them together
Yes, I get 82 sts to start the shaping which would leave 2 sts leftover after working the (k8, k2tog). I think your idea of k2tog at the end is a good one. Otherwise you’ll continue to have 2sts at the end of rows through the shaping.
Ok, thanks for your help!
