Help with Neck of Sweater

I’m new to knitting and struggling to understand the instructions for the neck of the sweater.

Shape neck opening:
Next row (RS): K49, slip last 16 sts worked onto stitch holder for center neck, k33.

How do I put the 16 stitches on the stitch holder and continue knitting on the other side? I’m using straight needles at the moment but am thinking that I might need circular needles for this.

does it instruct you to add a 2nd ball of yarn? You would continue the other side of the neck stitches w/that. Often patterns will have you knit both sides of the neck simultaneously.
