Help with knitting in the round - why am I getting garter stitch instead of stockinett?

I am knitting in the round with instructions to purl one row.
After purling one row, the following rows are knitted, but instead
of getting stockinett, I keep ending up with garter stitches. Help please

The only thing I can think of is you’re knitting the garment inside out. Try flipping the inside to the outside.

If you’re actually knitting in the round where you only knit on the outside… knit stitches should produce stockinette. You’d have to alternate knit rows and purl rows to get garter. UNLESS you are going from the inside of the loop to the outside and only knitting or you are actually knitting INSIDE the circle in which case you’d be getting purl stitches on the outside which would look like garter, too.

If you are knitting in the round and you knit a row, purl a row and then knit again, yes, you will have a garter ridge.

flat knitting - alternating knit and purl give stocking stitch, every row knit gives garter.

in the round, every row knit gives stocking stitch, alternating a round of knit with purl gives garter.
