The rib pattern is set over 2 rows as follows
K2, (P1, K2) to end
P2, (KB, P2) to end
Instructions - working extra sts into patt shape sleeve by increasing 1 st at each end of next row then on every foll 4th row
How do I do this increase while maintaining pattern
Really appreciate help with this
Many thanks!
Welcome to the forum!
You’ll need to account for the extra stitch as you add stitches. You can look at the written pattern rows that you have been following and insert the extra stitch as a knit or purl. When you have enough sts added, you can incorporate them into the pattern.
The easiest way to do this however is to look at the sts on the previous rows and figure out what stitch, knit or purl will keep you in pattern. You can look for the K2sts or the KB and work backward to how you should start the row in order to maintain the alignment.
For example, if you’re adding an extra stitch at the beginning of row 1 the row will looks like:
P1,K2, (P1, K2) to end working the extra stitch at the end as P1.
If it’s awkward to make a purl stitch at the beginning or end of row you can just work a knit stitch and on the next row, incorporate the stitch into the pattern.
You don’t want the increased stitch to cause the pattern to misalign.
Thank you. I made an extra knit stitch at both ends, so row 1 was K3 at the beginning and K3 at the end. when I come to next row I have 3 purl stitches at the beginning rather than 2. Should I purl all 3, is that correct. And at the end of the row the last stitch is now a K. Should I always start and end the row with the same stitch as is on the needle
I’ve done a ribbed sweater and on my second one now.
I chose to place my increase a couple of stitches away from the edge, for me it’s 4 sts in because I chose to have the new stitches emerge from a k2 as I prefer how this looks. For you it woukd be after 2 sts as you are starting with a k2 on the right side.
In the video rox puts a marker on the fabric as she doesn’t like it on the needle. I prefer it on the needle as it is a big reminder that at this point the pattern alters, so my pattern maintains the rib before the marker and after the marker but not AT the marker.
I have the seam in pattern (for me this is my 4 edge sts) and the new stitches emerge at the marker and keep pattern and alignment with the rest of the sleeve.
This was the first time in used the leaning yarn over increase which sounds difficult but rox explains it well in the tutorial and it works so well with rib.
So this is your row after the increase: K3, (P1, K2) to last repeat, ending k3
On the next row you could for simplicity sake, purl those end sts as you suggest.
On the following row, incorporate the new sts into the pattern or partial pattern stitch: P1, K2, (P1, K2) ending (P1,K2) P1
That makes the first several sts a repeat and the last stitch begins a new repeat which will be added to on subsequent rows.
You won’t always be working the next row with the first stitch the same as was worked at the end of the previous row. I find that it helps to look at the sts on the needle and then decide which will keep the pattern rib aligned. It’s just easier that way.
