Help with Gwyneth Poncho - transfering shoulder stitches from waste yarn

Hey guys, I’m a reasonably new (but enthusiastic!) knitter. I’m working on a poncho with a Wool And The Gang kit called Gwyneth Poncho. I’m about half way through and had all been going well but now I’m super confused! Hoping someone can help!

So I’ve knitted a big triangle by gradually increasing my rows for the front of the poncho. The pattern then had cast off in the middle to make a neckline and then work up 1 shoulder, transfer these stitches to waste yarn, then work up the other shoulder. It is now asking me to do the following:

  • Turn your work
  • cast on 23 stitches
  • turn your work
  • Transfer stitches on waste yarn back onto your needle
  • knit to the end of the row (97 stitches)

I’m super confused about where to add on the waste yarn stitches and whehher the idea is now to stitch across everything so that it’s all attached together? (Am knitting with circular needles)

Any help would be massively appreciated as don’t want to ruin what I’ve started!

You have the right idea, here. If in doubt, you could add a lifeline to the work you have already done by threading a length of smooth yarn through the stitches, similar in weight to the yarn you’re working with, and if you make a mistake it’s then going to be easy to get back to where you were so you can try again.

Thanks that’s a really good idea!

It’s a great idea to out the life line in.

This is probably more confusing in writing than it is looking at the work on the needles.
You are right in thinking you are joining up and working right across again.
The reason for all this turning of work which sounds confusing is because you will need the cast on of new stitches to be on the left hand needle. It’s possible to make new cast on stitches to a needle on the right hand side but not so nice and not recommended for more than a couple of stitches I believe (from what I’ve picked up here).
So you will start the row which works stitches off the left and onto the right.
Then turn, stitches now on left with working yarn ready to cast on, cast on the number given using a knit cast in or cable cast on or whatever your pattern says.
Then turn, the worked stitches and the new stitches are now on the right needle along with your working yarn ready to work the second shoulder stitches.
The second shoulder stitches will be moved from waste yarn into the left needle (or a spare needle of same or smaller size)
Now you are in position to work those stitches from left needle onto right needle by working as normal to the end of the row.
Everything is joined.

Hope this helps.
