Help with gloves on straight needles

Hi all,

New to the forum! Really excited to join. I’ve been knitting a few months and i’m working on my first pair of gloves on straight needles. I’m past the thumb working in stockinette and just starting the first finger. One thing I’m confused about though as I’m looking ahead to the 2nd finger…

Pattern says:
second finger:
With rs facing rejoin yarn (at base of 1st finger) and pick up and knit 2 sts from base of first finger, K7, turn
Next row: P16, cast on 2 sts

What i’m confused about is… how can I P16 after turning if I only knit 9 (7 plus the 2 picked up) total? Where do the other 7 come from?

And did I have to do anything special with the first finger? The first finger has me K33, turn P14, then cast on 2 for 16 and then work on these 16 stitches.

This issue pops up on fingers 3, 4, and 5 too, and i’ve decided to sit tight until i get some help. much appreciated!!

What’s the step after the p16?

It sounds like you’ll cast on the two, knit across 7 and then purl across part of the stitches from the first finger.

thanks for your reply  after the p16 and cast on 2, i just work in stockinette on those 18 stitches for a while. but how do i purl on stitches from the first finger–they aren’t live? wouldn’t it say to pick up?

Do you happen to have a link to the pattern?

Does this help?

the pattern is in a book-but i actually checked out that link before i got desperate and posted on this forum. if you are able to help me with the step of that page that i posted below, it has exactly the same issue though:

Hold the work with the right side facing. Knit 34 stitches, turn and cast on three stitches, turn again and purl 19. Work 32 or more rows in stockinette to form the first finger. Decrease as for thumb. Pick up four stitches for the second finger. Knit seven from the back of the knit glove and cast on three stitches. Turn and purl 19 stitches. Work 34 rows on these 19 stitches, then decrease as you have previously.

i think i figured it out–i think you knit across from the back of the glove to the front of the glove on that long purl row. that way there is only 1 seam per finger. wish me luck!

Good! I hope it works out for you.
