Help with Garter Stitch Sweater pattern

Hi!

I’m relatively new to knitting (a new COVID lockdown hobby!) and I’ve only knitted a scarf, blanket and hat so far. I wanted to try a jumper and found this “Garter Stitch Sweater” pattern by Katrine on LoveCrafts: November Jumper Knitting pattern by Katrine H | LoveCrafts

It suggested it was for a Beginner but I’m seriously starting to struggle. I’ve knitted the body on long circulars for 15 inches and I’ve now got 4 sts on either side of my markers (BOR and SM) stored on some spare yellow yarn - I’m not even sure if I did this right :worried:… I did this by stitching 4 past my BOR, turning my work and slipping those 4 plus the final 4 from the previous round before turning my working back around and continuing to the SM & repeating the above.

Anyway, so I’ve now got my body on the circulars:

The next step says
SLEEVES Cast on 34 sts on needle US 11 (8mm) or 7mm with magic loop (long circular needles) or double pointed needles.
Put BOR marker for the BOR = bottom center of the sleeve.”

So, question:
Where exactly do I cast on? Am I supposed to have a second set of 8mm circular needles? The pattern didn’t tell me I’d need more than one set and from my googling I’ve seen people suggest an entire jumper can be made with one circular needle (but they don’t explain how!). I’ve watched some magic loop videos so I think I’m okay with this method, I’m just lost on how & where I start

Do I need to buy another 8mm circ needle? Or do I need to store all of these body stitches somewhere (132 sts) - if I do this I’m not sure I know how to get them all back onto the needle when it comes to joining :confounded:

Also, I only have a tiny ball of yarn left at this point - do I start whatever my next step is with a new ball? The last 8 stitches have been slipped at this stage and everything feels like it’s all very loose:

Thanks in advance, I’m sure I’m making this much more complicated than it is - I just have no idea what to do next!

Thanks,
Annie

Welcome to the forum and to knitting!
Your knitting looks lovely and even. You’ve worked the held sts correctly for the body of the sweater, too. Yes, you’ll either need to use a spare needle or to move the sts to waste yarn.

If you have a needle that’s a smaller size, that’ll work to hold the sts and be easier than the waste yarn. In a pinch the waste yarn works too but you do have to be careful moving the sts back from the waste yarn to the needle. The stitches are slipped purlwise both to and from the waste yarn.

See the demo at 1:00min.

You can start the sleeve with new ball of yarn since there’s so little left of the original ball. Just leave the current working yarn where it is for now since it might come in handy later. Magic loop will work with the circular needle that you’re using now. Once you made the 2 sleeves, all the parts of the sweater will come together on one needle to knit the yoke.

Amazing! Thank you so much for this reply, I do have a 5mm circular - I don’t know why I didn’t think of using this as a stitch holder! Great, so I’ll start slipping the body over and I can get cracking with the sleeves

I may be back with some more questions later! :yarn:
