Help with Cable Patter

:gah: Hi, can anyone explain the following language in my cable pattern:

"Cable set-up row:(RS): K10, work in Cable Pattern B (0) time, work Cable Pattern A (4) times, work cable pat. C(0) time, k10 st.) Work in patterns as established for 9 pattern reps, the work rows 1-6 once more. "

My comment: This pattern calls for 140 st cast on. Cable Pattern A is done over a multple of 30 sts and consists of rows 1-8 with purl being all even rows.

Please explain the relationship between the set-up row and working the first row of the cable pattern Is the set-up row repeated throughout the pattern?? HELP!! Thanks!

Usually the set up row is just that–worked once to align the stitches for the rest of the pattern.

thanks.

I have one more follow up question. When you say that the set-up row is used once to align the stitches for the rest of the pattern, does this also mean that it is used each time you begin the first row of the pattern, when you are directed to work patterns for multiple times? It seems logical that you would, since it is difficult to just plunge into the cable pattern I’m doing. Am I right about this. Sorry, I need you to be literal with me cause this is my first cable pattern!!! Thanks.

Without seeing the actual pattern, I can say this: If the set-up row is row 1 of the 6-row cable pattern, then yes, use it again. If row 1 starts after the set-up row, then it’s a one-time thing.

Is there a link to the pattern, or, if not, where is it from? I might have it.

here is what the pattern states:

Cast on 140 sts. "Cable set-up row:(RS): K10, work in Cable Pattern B (0) time, work Cable Pattern A (4) times, work cable pat. C(0) time, k10 st.) Work in patterns as established for 9 pattern reps, the work rows 1-6 once more. "

Does this help answer the question?? Why don’t the patterns make it clear whether to use the set up throughout or not. Thanks for your help with this.

So you do A across the entire set-up row, right? Where do B and C come into the picture?:??

HI Ingrid, thanks for your answer. I will try to get you an electronic version of the pattern and send it with a reply thread later this week. From the directions so far, for my size (medium) you don’t work cable pattern’s B or C until you get to the sleeves. I’m confused! Anyway, when you read this pattern, maybe you can give some pointers. It came from Vogue Knitting Magazine, Winter 2006/2007 Pattern No. 15: Cable Cardigan. I tried emailing Vogue also, but have not heard back from them. Stay tuned…

:happydance:I have that magazine–let me take a look at it!

OK, I get it. Cable patterns B and C are just to make the sweater wider by adding more cables, so they don’t come into play unless you’re making the larger sizes.

Your cable set-up row is the first row of Pattern A, not a separate thing.
