Help with a sweater

This might be a simple and straightforward sweater knitting pattern to many of you, except that I’ve never knitted a sweater. I’m sad that the writing doesn’t even make sense to me. The pattern tells me to work flat to make the back piece in stockinette stitch until a certain length and cut yarn - this I know how to do.

Then I’m totally lost when the next step is to make right shoulder (front panel). I don’t even how to begin. What is your favorite video link of German short technique for casting on the edge of the back?

Right Shoulder (front panel)
You will now pick up and knit stitches along the cast on edge of the back to create the right shoulder as well as work a few short rows using German short row technique to shape the shoulder, you will do so in the following way:
Using US 10 / 6.00 mm, 80 cm / 32” circular needles and with the right side facing you, along the cast on edge starting from the right shoulder edge working your way towards the center (right side of the neck edge), pick up and knit 29 stitches

Be of good cheer. This is an unusual construction and not the simplest of patterns.

What is the name of your pattern and the designer?
Here’s a video for German short rows. The technique works quite well.

Your directions about when to work the turn may be different but the technique should be the same.
Here’s also a video for picking up the sts. I find that it helps to divide the area where sts are to be picked up in half so that I can stay on track. Toward the end Amy shows how to pick up across a cast on or bound off edge.

Congratulations on venturing into your first sweater! It may seem daunting but you’ll be able to work through it and we’ll all be happy to help.

You’ll get this. It’s a great technique to avoid shoulder seams; I use it on top down sweaters because it makes trying them on as I go so much easier. Please do share a link to the pattern.

Thank you!!! Yes, this is a top down knit sweater. Now I understand what “pick up” means and learn how to make double stitch by German short row technique.

I’m not sure if the link to this pattern is private or not because I have to log into my account to view it. Am I allowed to share a purchased pattern?

The pattern is called Good Grandpa Cardigan by Caideree. I’m using Knickpicks bulky bare swish yarn.

Oh, nice. Yes the pattern name and designer is fine.

Thanks! That looks comfy! :purple_heart:
