Help with a neck gusset, Please

Hello
I am hoping someone can help me, before I have to abandon the project!

This is a UK pattern, Child’s Striped Guernsey Sweater (4008). I have reached the Join Shoulders and shape neck gusst part and am now completely stuck. I have joined the shoulder as instructed but then the next part doesn’t make sense to me. It says to ‘knit 1 in next stitch and turn’. The next row then confuses me: from where do I ‘slip 1, and purl 2’? I only have rwo stitches on the turn.Am I supposed to still use the front snd back stitches together, should these now be separated.

A pic of the instructions is here. Can anyone explain what I need to do in plain language, please?

Thank you.

Welcome to KH!
Very interesting idea, especially in a child’s sweater.
After you join the 14sts (for the smallest size, for example) front and back for the shoulders, you will be working with the remaining front and back sts that were on hold.
Before each turn you’ll work one more stitch either from the front held sts or the back held sts. That’s where the extra sts to be worked will come from. The sts that were joined for the shoulder will stay joined but each row listed as “Next Row” will add one more stitch from the remaining held sts.
It may make it easier to work this if you transfer some of the front sts to a spare needle and some of the back sts to another needle so that it’s easy to add sts in with every row.

What size are you making (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th)?

Beautiful combination of stitches on this adorable sweater.

Hello
Thank you so muchfor responding. I had been enjoying this lovely pattern until now! I am making the third size.

I really think I must have something wong. I have all the back stitches on one needle and all the front on the other. In my right hand I have one stitch remaining from the caste off. If I then knit one stitch from the front and turn I have two stitches now on the left hand needle. From where do I slip the next stitch? If from the back right hand needle the working yarn is in the wrong place!

It sounds like you’ve got it right. Those 2 stitches on your left needle are the beginning of the gusset. Slip the first of those 2 stitches to your right needle, purl the next and then purl another from your held stitches (ie P2), Turn. Next row slip the first of those 3 stitches to your right needle, K3, Turn and so on until you have the required number of stitches for the gusset. From what I can see in the pattern, it looks like those stitches are then put on hold while you do the other side. Hope that helps. It’s a beautiful pattern, gorgeous colours too. I’ve made made many ganseys the traditional way for adults but never one with neck gussets.

How frustrating that the model’s hair is covering the gussets in the photo!

Yes, I hadn’t realised it had this feature. But then again, I made the classic mistake of not reading through the pattern before I began.

Thank you. I think I have got it now! I was getting muddled with too many needles (and not enough hands!!)

I am very pleased to have found this forum.

Would love a photo when you’re done :hugs:

It does seem like several needles flying around at once but it’s not too any short rows and you’ll be through it.
It is good to read through a pattern ahead of time but so often directions that don’t make sense on a read through are perfectly clear with sts on the needles. This just didn’t happen to be one of those times. We’re glad you found us too. Enjoy finishing up this sweater!

Found another photo in which you can just see the gusset (pink bit on shoulder between yellow stripes):
