So I am having serious problems trying to do 2x2 ribbing…I can knit…I can purl…I can do SS but once I do knit 2 purl 2 it is a mess!! After 10 rows all you can see is a lumpy, bumpy mess…
Any tips or advice on how to get it looking right…
I guess lumpy in a way that you can’t see the ribbing really…its a jumbled mess…I have no idea what I am doing wrong…Im purling right and knitting right and bringing the yarn forward and back…
I’ll have to do a sample and post a picture to help out.
Until you get very experienced, sometimes it’s hard to get ribbing started. There are a couple of tricks that might help in 2 X 2.
Whatever you finished with on one side, say 2 knit sts, begin the other side with the opposite-- in this case, 2 purl sts.
If you have cast on a multiple of 4 sts, then each side will begin with 2 knit sts.
If the number of cast on sts is divisible by 2 BUT NOT 4, such as 14 or 22 or 38, then row 1s will begin with 2 knits, and row 2s will begin with 2 purls, alternating like that throughout the rib.
Could you be doing seed stitch instead? When you rib, you k2, p2 for your row, then when you turn the work you knit the knits and purl the purls AS THEY APPEAR when you are looking at them (not what you did on the other side).
When you do seed stitch, after you turn, you knit the purls and purl the knits AS THEY APPEAR.
I know I was quite confused about my first seed stitch project, and ended up with ribbing, thinking that the “mess” was wrong–just the opposite of your problem, if my guess is correct.
ok…so I am doing a little sample of just ten stitches to start off on…
I ended with two knit stitches and started with two knit stitches…so when I go to the next row do I do the same thing start and end with knit or do I start with purls??
If you’re doing ribbing and end with 2 knit stitches you’ll start with two purl stitches. Each stitch has two sides one is purl the other is knit. Ribbing is knitting the knits and purling the purls. If you learn what the stitches look like it will help you all through your knitting career.
Oh and when you knit both sides you get garter. Which is why when you knit the ends stitches and then started with knit stitches you had bumpy stitches.
