I have been knitting for several years, but most of the sweaters I have knit have been pullovers so I’m not sure I can picture how this construction of this cardigan is working. I have uploaded photos of the pattern below.
For the “Buttonhole rows” section, do I understand it correctly that after I bind off three, I purl for 5 stitches, then bind off three more then purl to the end. Then coming back I knit until I get to those same bind off spots and cast on three stitches in the place where the bind off occured, and then repeat that same process twice more for each row? I’m just struggling to understand how that will work, but if that is the correct interpretation, then I will just trust the process and continue on.
Thank you!
Welcome to the forum!
The button and buttonhole bands will be folded lengthwise to form the band and facing. That’s the reason for the two sets of bind offs and then 2 sets of cast on sts across these 2 rows. You won’t need to repeat the buttonholes until the ninth repeat of rows 11 and 12.
Oh okay. Thank you so much for explaining that!!

I’m at the point where I have separated for the sleeves. The pattern calls for the sleeves to be worked flat and then seamed after they are completely knit. However, could I just cast on the additional stitches and knit the sleeves in the round instead? That would be much faster for me, and I m assuming that would work, right?
Sure. The sleeve sts are held on waste yarn so you would cast on sts at the underarm, knit across the held sts, cast on more sts at the underarm then join to knit in the round. I usually cast on two more sts than the pattern calls for then decrease the extra sts at each side of the underarm to lessen any hole that might try to form there.
You’re making fantastic progress!
