I am attempting to knit my first pair of socks on dpns and it was going great until I got to the heel flap. I followed the patter but it just doesn’t seem right. I have 20 stitches on four needles. The pattern said k5, k 10 and place these 10 stitches on a stitch holder, k 5. So this accounted for all 20 stiches. Then it says to work back and forth (p on WS and k on RS) for 3". However, my working yarn is in the middle of my two remaining dpns. Wouldn’t this make on side of 5 stitches one row longer than the other? I am so confused! I attached a picture…
It looks like you need to turn your sock so that the working yarn is coming from the right needle, and I believe you will then have the knit side facing you. Knit to the end, then turn and purl back. Keep working flat for the 3 inches. Yes, you will have 1 extra row on the one side, but that won’t hurt anything.
You have your sock inside out as you are working it. Usually the smooth side of the St st is on the outside as you work, but this may not be a problem. Someone will know more. I think maybe it works fine but I’ve never done it that way so I can’t be sure.
I knit socks on two sets of circulars so I won’t be much help to you probably. What I do for the heel flap is drop one set of circulars which holds 30 stitches and just work the second set of circular that has the other 30 stitches and work back and forth for 2 1/2 inches with the heel flap pattern. Maybe it would help if you would type up more of the pattern for us.
Thanks!!! Glad to know the one extra row wont hurt it…
The pattern is a Lion Brand pattern:

I’m sorry I can’t help you with your question but I just wanted to say that your sock looks really good so far!! The stitches look great! I have a bunch of DPN’s here that someone gave me and I bought sock yarn, but haven’t taken the plunge yet. I can’t wait to see your finished product!
