I have not knitted anything for quite some time, and the only sock experience I have is with a UFO in sock weight and a pair of worsted weight regular ones.
There is a man I know that I would really like to knit a pair of socks for… but he is a really big guy (6’7") and nothing ever fits him… I want to make sure the socks will fit!
However, they are to be a surprise and I don’t want to measure him or anything…
is it going to be possible to knit a pair of socks that will have a chance in heck of fitting him? And if so, do I need a special pattern for big feet/guys or something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I should have started with a hat but I’m not sure he would wear a knitted hat… whereas EVERYONE wears socks.
1–what is his shoe size?
several sock books (Sensational knitted sock, 2 socks at a time, etc) have guides to shoe size sock length
2–can you get a measurement of his foot/ankle? (if not, think about this, most WOMAN’s socks are about 8 inches in diameter, men’s AVERAGE sock are about 9.5 inches… a large men’s sock might be 10 inches in diameter.
(you can also judge by the hand size… big hands mean big feet (and as for other bone-less part of the anatomy… myth!)
3–consider a sock with some sort of pattern (there are several books that have men’s sock (and pattern (stitch patterns) PLAIN knitting (for a big sock!) can get boring!
I am now knitting sock for a man with a size 13 foot… Big socks! on fine needles (size 2) a size 13 shoe is about 11.67 inches long… lots of knitting still to do (i am at inch 4 of the foot!)
