How does this granny square look crooked? The middle part is not straight with the rest of the square here is a picture of it. I have counted and counted and redone and I just cannot figure it out so if someone could lend me a hand, I would appreciate it.
I’m really not a crocheter, so you will get better advise from others, but, I think this is just the nature of crochet that I pulls to one side. I don’t think it’s your crochet ability or anything done wrong, it’s just how the stitches are formed which make the tension somewhat uneven.
You are very nice to have responded to my note. Thank you for your explanation that comes to you about the crocheting. I really believe that that is what’s going on. My specialty is knitting and I try my best to crochet LOL
I think I read that some patterns/people work each round from the opposite side (RS, then WS) to even out the lean somewhat. I think the rounds then still lean but the overall square is perhaps more square than working all from one side.
Oh, I have read that too !
I bet that would work a lot better.
I guess you can do that on any project that you are working on.
Thanks for that thought.
Yes, crochet stitches lean to one side. It will definitely help to work the rounds in opposite directions, although it will look a bit different.
Maybe all it needs is blocking! You can try blocking this square and see if that straightens it out, before you pull it all out.
Thanks good idea
Just what is the best way to block something?
Here is my new Little square thinking I could redo it. Should I try to block this or block? The first one I was making? I sure need you guys‘s help.
I don’t see any serious issues. Blocking the first one might make it more to your liking. What pattern are you using? I’m thinking that where you start the new round might make a difference.
I saw your post last night but was too sleepy to attempt a reply. I’m glad you got some good input and that this was bumped to the top.
The actual pattern was written or typed so small that I re-wrote the pattern again by hand
If you have a blocking mat and blocking pins you can probably get a more polished square looking finish, but remember that even with blocking the stitches will lean because of how they’re made. Those pins in a straight line (sorry no idea of the name) seem to work well with straight edges from what I’ve seen in pics.
Check the ball band for wash instructions and you can block in a similar way (ie wash, then pin and dry flat) or place wet tea towels on the square. Crochet (like knitted lace) seems to do well from pinning out to block.
Fiber Spider’s video might help. Or it might be exactly the same as you were doing already. If you look for how to crochet a granny square you should see enough different ways of doing things to find what works for you.
These things? I’ve seen them called blocking combs and to me that’s a fitting description.
Yes those. Thanks. There’s an automatically straighter edge by using something like that rather than individual pins.
I’ve never bought any as I realise I’m a lazy blocker. I’ll wash and smooth out to dry flat but that’s about my limit. My pins have been used once or twice at most.
It looks like you don’t turn your work after every row, which can make your stitches lean to one side with a bit of a crooked result. This is usually fixed if you block your work afterwards. But even if you do turn your work after every row you might still need to block your work. Especially if you’re making multiple squares and you want them to have the same shape/size.
