HELP, Pick up stitches question

OK, so I am not a newbie to knitting. Having said that, I picked up my stitches to knit the hood onto Teddy All-In-One. Once I counted, I had one to few stitches. I will add a stitch, but I am not sure if I should add it at the beginning of the row, the middle of the row, then end of the row, well you get the message. The first row of knitting calls for ribbing 1X1. Where do I add the stitch? Help please!

Knit a few sts in the 1x1 pattern, at the next knit st do a kfb, then k1, p1 back into the pattern. The new st will blend in like a purl. Or if you prefer, do a m1 after knit, then k1,p1…

kfb? knit into the front and then the back of the same stitch? and on the third stitch in?

I’d do it anywhere. Maybe in the middle, on the first row/round. I’d use a M1 instead of kfb, and after a purl stitch (so p1, M1, p1, k1, p1…)

Thanks so much Ladies! I’m on a roll now. Teddy will have a hood.

So sorry for bothering you all with something that I should have known, and turns out I did know myself. I have always been underconfident about picking up stitches. The pattern always says to pick up and knit the stitches. I can’t seem to do it that way, I pick them all up, then I knit them, then I go forward with the pattern. I am always worried that I am going to mess up the finished product by picking up stitches and it not looking nice then.

Oh well, the stitches are on now and I have an inch of the hood knitted, so … hi-ho hi-ho, it’s off to knit I go!

Pick up and knit is an older term where you do pick up the sts with the left needle and then knit across them. Most people now just pick up with the right knitwise and work them on the next row/round. You can put the increase st anywhere; just make it between 2 knits or 2 purls.

I would kfb in the middle of your hood.

The Construction of Teddy All-In-One continues. The Hood is finished! Now all that is left are the button bands, the ribbing around the hood and the sleeves. I’ll post a picture later. Right now, after pulling another knitting all nighter, I am going to bed!!!
