Help needed can I shorten already knitted sweater

Icelandic yoked sweater fits great except for length about 4 inches needs to come off. Can I undo sweater from bottom until its the right length and knit a rib hope this makes sense.

What is the name of your pattern and designer?
If it was knit top down, it’ll be relatively easy to undo the bind off at the hem and shorten.
If it was knit bottom up, it’s not so simple to undo and reknit. You can do this:

It works very nicely. I’ve used it to shorten sweaters. Just clip toward the middle of a row at about where you would like the sweater to end before the ribbing. Then you can pick up the loops and knit the ribbing.

Brilliant thanks it’s the yellow hillock from icelandic knits, it’s my own fault didn’t get son to try it on lesson now learnt.

I seem to remember there being a stitch short if you do the surgery and knit down on a body that was originally knit up. Just a pointer to check stitch count works for your ribbing and add one if needed. It’s probably covered in the sweater surgery link, but just in case it’s not.

Thanks, Haven’t started the surgery on the sweater yet will have to decrease before I do rib. if I remember rightly I had to increase 6 stitches after rib so surgeon here is writing down her instructions so as not mess up yet again.

All good surgeons do the prep beforehand!
Remember to make the cut away from the edge so that you have a long enough yarn strand to weave in. The fact that you’ll be changing the pattern stitch from stockinette to ribbing covers any transtion nicely.

Fingers crossed I don’t mess up, think I’ll have to operate on the top as well, all sweaters from wilderness knits fitted, perhaps a little tight when he lifted arms but stretched on wearing, this pattern same size but decreases different on yoke so sweater is bulging at chest will have knitted this sweater twice over way I’m going.

Oh I know the feeling. I did that with a brioche knit from Martin Storey. The result was worth all the time and mulling over how-to but I could have knit another project in the meantime.
You can always try this out on a swatch just to see how it goes. I’ve used it to shorten sleeves and several times to shorten sweaters. Creations is correct that you will be one stitch short on the sweater. It’s because you are picking up the loops between sts rather than the actual sts. Like the 4 spaces between fingers rather than the 5 fingers.
