Left of picture is the left front 5th row
Right of picture is where I’m a little unsure
Please can anyone help me understand if this pattern instruction means
A) I follow row 5 but only between the asterisks and then foll the rest of the rows (24 rows) the same…just between *
B) where it states ‘cont in patt Inc 1 St at each end’, does that mean starting from the 6th row inc 1 St each end and then again every 4th row aka next inc would be row 10

What is the name of your pattern and designer?
You’ve already established the pattern on rows 1-4. That places the cable section and the moss stitch on each side of the cable section. Continue with this pattern of moss stitch and cable section between the asterisks. You don’t want the cable pattern to misalign so you will need the moss stitch in addition to the cable section.
The next row will be row 6 so the following 4th row will be row 10 as you posted. Then rows 14,18,22 and so on.

Yes ok, I understand fully why I’m knitting between the asterisks now! Row 5 is knitted between the asterisks then without the inc but row 6 I inc a st each end as moss stitch and then on rows 10, 14, 18, 22 or until I reach (for my size) 75 St’s. Got it and thank you thank you thank you

I will be happy to share, not sure how long it might be though haha. Yes, such a lovely cable pattern. Not sure if I will be able to achieve it tbh but going to keep trying!
OK lovely ladies, it’s been 18 months and a lot of illness but I have managed to complete the back and sides and a sleeve since my last post. I am trying to do the right front border now. I have completed the 204 St’s [size 3] and the next row and work 2 rows more in rib.
Now…I have been doing the following two rows and the buttonholes are just not lining up. I have undone these two rows 10 times now and I’m rather ready to give up again.
In my calculations, Next row Rib 3, cast off 2 sts, (rib [13],cast off 2 sts) 4 times, rib to end instructions equals the following;
After first buttonhole: 3 stitches
After second buttonhole: 16 stitches
After third buttonhole: 29 stitches
After fourth buttonhole: 42 stitches
After fifth buttonhole: 55 stitches
After completing the row in rib I am left with 194 sts. 140 sts to the first missing sts of the first buttonhole I reach.
This is where nothing aligns. The next row states rib to last 59 sts. Cast on 2 sts, (rib [14], cast on 2 sts) 4 times, rib 3.
If I rib to 59 sts left I am 4 or 5 sts ahead of the first buttonhole. So I’ve ribbed to 59 sts cast on 2 sts but I’m now 6 sts away from the buttonhole when I begin rib 14.
What am I missing? Can you help please 
This is such a pretty cardigan. I’m sorry about the illness that slowed you down but you made great progress nonetheless.
Probably the eaiest way to work these buttonholes is to follow the pattern and cast offs. On the next row, rib to the cast off sts and work the cast on. Saves counting or counting errors and neatly aligns the buttonhole.
When you work the second row to complete the buttonhole, are you accounting for the extra stitch left over from the bind off?
The buttonhole cast off row (left to right) is:
3sts__14__14__14__14__*rib to end
where the underscores are the 2sts cast off for the buttonholes. Working the next row (right to left) which completes the buttonholes, you would begin the cast on of 2sts at the asterisk (59sts on the needle).
Sorry to hear you’ve been ill. I’ll cheer you along as you make progress on this very complex cardigan.
I think you’ll be back on track with salmonmac’s help, but if you do end up thinking of giving up you could instead consider a no-cut afterthought buttonhole. I have used these and they work brilliantly. They don’t look messy which was my worry.

I wondered if I should just line the cast on 2 sts with the previous row cast off as that’s where the buttonholes is created.
I just re-read what you had written about the bind off and I think so yes but not sure what you mean to be honest. This is my first ever cardigan and never done buttonholes before.

There are a few different ways, seeing a couple of videos and perhaps trying on a swatch first would be useful.
But you won’t need it, the buttonholes will go well now.
You have exactly the right idea. Align the cast on sts over the gap from the bind off. That’s going to complete the buttonhole.
