Hi, well I’m thinking of knitting/crocheting a scarf for my girlfriend who is living in North Carolina. I am completely new at this and am seeking help.

1 - She’ll probably like either.
2 - it depends on the yarn, go up a couple sizes from the hook or needle on the label gauge to make it soft and drapey.
3 - pick one that feels soft and cuddly to you.
4 - there’s bazillions of patterns; you could do lace (in which case use an even larger hook or needle), or if you have variegate yarn a simple stitch shows off the yarn.
What is the main difference between knitting and croteching? I mean is the thickness diff or like the pattern?
You’ve never done either, have you…?
Crochet stitches are a bit thicker than knit stitches, but if you use a little larger hook then they’re not stiffer. They both use hundreds of stitch patterns which are just combinations of the basic stitches.
Knitting has really only one basic stitch - it looks like a knit on one side and a purl on the other and you work them a little differently depending on which side is facing you and what look you’re going for. They can also be done on the same row in different sequences and if you do increases and decreases they will form different stitch patterns like lace or zig zaggy patterns. Crochet has several different stitches and they can be combined too to form different looks.
Look through the scarf patterns at www.knittingpatterncentral.com and www.crochetpatterncentral.com to get some ideas what you can do with both types of yarn work.

It all depends. Some people prefer crochet or knitting, for some it depends on the pattern. For me, crochet came first, I just wasn’t coordinated enough to manage 2 needles and I didn’t even know about Continental knitting which is the only way I can knit. I think the English method requires more coordination, at least for me.
As for which is better for you, if you really are starting at the beginning for knitting and crochet, give both a try and then see what you want to do. It could be a simple decision based on which you find easier to do. Learn both, IMHO, as each has its good points for different projects.

You have a very lucky girlfriend.
My immediate response was going to be, “Whichever you can do faster.” For me, that would be crochet, esp. something like double crochet (stitches).
I agree with the above advice: learn both skills first. Decide which one is more comfortable for you GIVEN that you want to make a completed scarf by Christmas. Both skills may be comfortable; what a problem! ha ha
So then it will be a matter of which look you prefer and the speed at which you can work. My crochet is MUCH faster than my knitting; I’ve known how to crochet for over 20 years, but I only learned to knit in May 2011.
Good luck, and come back with questions. Yarn stores (even Joann’s and Michael’s) offer classes in basic knitting and crochet, so don’t think that the only way to learn is via on-line videos. There are also books–I learned how to knit from a book aimed at teenagers, so don’t discount anything!

even i have just started out a few days back. i’m glad i’m not the only person who has not much idea about all of this ^o^ i tried knitting and i could not do it. i can do crochet though. i am doing right now.
