Help! How do I do this?

I am relatively new to knitting. I was feeling pretty guttsy but now I find I need some help from all of you more experienced knitters out there. I usually knit more basic items, but am trying to knit a sweater. (for my mother’s birthday…) The free patterern “One Button Cardigan” at the Lion Brand site. The pattern reads as follows: (This is for the left front)

“Shape V-neck: Keeping to pat, decrease 1 st at center Front on next row, then every 4 (3, 3, 3, 3, 3) rows 12 (18, 16, 22, 20, 26) times …”

My question is this. Should the decrease be only on the “center Front” side?? I hope I am making myself clear… because I am really confused! Any and all clarification would be appreciated.

I think this is to make the v?
so there would be a decrease at the edge of the front side (on the edge where the buttons or button holes would go), and then later there will be decreases for the armholes, but you probably haven’t gotten to those yet?

is there a diagram too?

Yes, you’re shaping the v-neck at the front. If you were to shape the armhole at the same time, they would boldly say AT THE SAME TIME.

HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM… I don’t think there is any armhole shaping to this pattern… there also is no diagram. (there is a picture at the Lion Brand website.
So… " decrease 1 at the center Front on the “next” row, then every three rows". Is that first decrease counted as row one???

example… say I am on row 3 and then I start the decrease 1 one row 4…

row 4: start with decrease 1 (then every three rows)
row 5: knit in pattern (row 1)
row 7: knit in pattern (row 2)
row 8: decrease 1 on center front side (even if center front side is at the end of the row) (row 3)
row 9: knit in pattern
row 10: knit in pattern
row 11: decrease 1 on center front side

Please bare with me… I hope the above helps explain my question…

Yes, you’ve got it!

Oh! Thank you, thank you, thank you sooo much!!! I really want this sweater to turn out right!

Yes, it’s a drop sleeve pattern, which means no armhole shaping.
