Hi everyone, My name is squizzer, don’t ask why it was a school name that has stuck with me for 40 years.
I have just found this brilliant site.
I am English but have lived in the Fethiye area of Turkey for the last 8 years.
Wool is so very cheap here, everyone knits in the winter months I have bought my very nice chunky wool for 1tl 100gm which is less than 50 pence per ball
Thanks to all for your info so far, I would be lost without you
I am very new to knitting, but to jump in feet first i am making a sweater, so good so far, but the pattern is confusing me.
The pattern is in inches but I have converted to cm by way of the internet
I have done the back but increased the length by a few cms, I thought it was a bit too short, now I am on the front.
I have done so far but the pattern says to shape the neck then to shape the shoulders?
Is this right, I would have thought to shape the shoulders before the neck.
Please can someone help me.
I await your replies and advice, thanks so much, I would like to get this finished by next weekend to surprise a friend
Hi!
I need to fly to Turkey, right away. Those prices!
If you shape the shoulders before the neck depends on the pattern.
With a deep V-neck, of course, you shape the neck many rows before the shoulders.
With a boatneck you do that all the way at the top.
Do you have a link to your pattern somewhere? or a picture of the finished piece?
“Shaping” proably just means to decrease or cast off some stitches in specific spots. Mostly you slope the shoulders from the edges.
And for a V-neck you split your work in the middle, then work each side seperately, decreasing every other row (mostly).
For a round neck or boat neck you mostly cast off / bind off many stitches in the middle, then a few more 2 rows later, maybe several times.
The neckline sits lower on the body than the shoulders, especially in the front. The back neck is usually only 2 or 3 rows lower than the shoulders, but you still get to it first in knitting.
If you have more specific questions, please feel free to ask them. You can’t post an entire pattern, but just a few lines to ask ‘what does this mean?’ is perfectly okay.
Welcome, glad that you found us. And your yarn prices there are fantastic!
Hello again, thanks so much for your replies so far,
sorry I have not replied sooner, I had an unexpected trip to the UK, which is where I am now (with my knitting)
Anyway I still haven’t worked the pattern out yet as I only picked it up again yesterday, please go easy on me as a very new beginner, so here goes
The back is finished
Front: work as for back until work measures approx 6’’ ending a WS row
Shape Neck: Work across 14st join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off centre 11 sts, complete row. Work both sides at once with seperate balls of yarn, dec 1st (knit to last 3sts on left side, k2tog. k1; k1, ssk, knit to end on right side) at each neck edge
[every RS row] 4 times (10 sts rem each shoulder)
Shape Shoulders: Work until front measures same as back to shoulders. Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows.
Just do exactly as it says, do the armhole shaping the same as the back, and work for 6", then do 14 sts, drop your yarn and take a new yarn end and BO the next 11 sts and finish the row. Do the WS row with the 2 yarns on either side of the neck gap, and on the RS row work to the neck and k2tog, k1, drop the yarn, pick up the other one and k1, ssk and knit to end of the row then turn and work the WS row. Do the decrease on every RS row 4 times total and you should have 10 sts left on each shoulder.
Yeah, that’s looking like a v-neck, which would have the neck below the shoulders. A crew neck would have the neck at or above shoulder shaping but a v-neck goes lower. Also, anything that has the “boobie look” like some of the tops and such made for women nowadays would have the neck WAY lower than the shoulders. In those, the neck can go down nearly to mid-chest or is worked as a wrap. Yes, the internet is grand, isn’t it? My fav. online conversion site is onlineconversion.com. I love that it converts anything to anything and has several categories, to cover ALL measurements… including ones we probably wouldn’t use… :teehee:
No not a V neck there’s only 4 rows you decrease on, it’s a regular round neck pattern. A V neck would be much longer and you wouldn’t cast off 11 sts in the middle.
