My name is Elsy and I am mostly a self taught knitter and sometimes I need help understanding some patterns like the Spruce hat designed by Richard Boxhall. I have a chart but I am confused on when to start counting the stitches to mark every 14 stitches if before I start the ladderback or while doing it?
You can mark the placement of the ladderback whenever you would like, either before the ladderback starts or along the first row. You may not need the technique for the first several rows (unless there are some light color boxes not shown on the chart) but it won’t hurt to have the placement marked.
